preparations for an eventual economic collapse

i encourage all to start a food and water supply besides their normal food shopping. food shortages may be ahead, but i think that it will become so high in price, even a loaf of bread. also, stock up on some other items like medical kits, emergency candles, etc. so when the dollar collapses totally, what are we going to buy food with? its good to have xtra. God wants His people prepared and ready for the trying times ahead. you dont want to be one of those out in the store fighting off other people for water and food supplies at the last minute. also, you may want to get even xtra for family and friends that wont prepare for themselves. dollar stores have some good bargains. what do you think about this?

1. Tabloid Theology

We are generously permissive and adaptive to strange stories, folk-lore, and bizarre shared experiences without being critical. Why? Because when it comes to our beliefs, we are ready to practice a methodology that would never pass muster in any other area of life. This is called tabloid theology.

Let me relate this to journalism first.

Tabloid journalism. You know what this is. It is sensationalistic journalism and it is a billion dollar business. It preys on our naiveté to believe something unbelievable. It exists because we like to let down our critical guard and indulge our minds by believing that which normally would be rejected. From alien abductions to pregnant men, the tabloids have it all.

Tabloid theology is the same. It is sensationalistic theology. More than this, it reflects the uncritical attitude of much of our religious culture today. It is the result of a culture that creates a dichotomy between the mind and faith. It is fueled by people’s uncritical methodology. A tabloid theologian is one who constructs his or her theology based upon naiveté. In the Bible, this is called a “simpleton.”

Some examples of tabloid theology:

1. The pancake with Jesus’ image proves that Jesus is real.

2. Statues of Mary crying.

3. Stories of miraculous healings need to be believed without question.

4. The shroud of Turin.

5. The Bible Code.

6. The story of the microphone which picked up the screams of hell during an oil drilling.

7. “If you receive this email, pass it on to five people and you will receive a blessing. If you don’t there will be a curse.” (Don’t say you have not done this!)

8. “If you send a financial gift to this ministry, you will receive a cloth from brother ________ that will heal you.”


Many television preaching personalities rely upon the existence of tabloid theologians for their messages will be received without question. Criticism will kill tabloid theology—instantly. Therefore, criticism is seen to be sinful and dishonoring among some. “Doubter! Skeptic! Do you not believe that God will heal?” Many are guilted into becoming uncritical thinkers believing that this is what God would desire of the truly spiritual.

This dichotomy of faith and intellect is not only destructive, I believe it is a sinful dishonoring of God by neglecting the stewardship of our mind. God calls on us to love Him with our entire being, the mind included. When a person believes anything and everything, this evidences a neglect and forfeiture of the mind and jeopardizes the foundation of their belief.

ok,but was wondering why im being warned on my discussion about this issue, is there something in this topic that merits this warning about tabloid theology? not sure what tabloid theology has to do with this discussion or what brought this to mind?

It has alot to do with this discussion sis. I am forever addressing the community as a whole and hardly ever individuals. In most of my posts i point to that intend so the participants of the discussion do not take my post personally, but instead understand i am trying to teach something that hopefully edifies everyone. 

 

When it comes to the topic you have brought up, which i think is a beautiful one, as i stated before, it is very important to not be misguided by those who fall into tabloid theology. Topices like the one you brought up in this discussion lend themselves for such sensationalism etc..

This discussion has been very informing.  Bottom line is to prepare for the crash as led by the Spirt I'd like to switch gears and talk about the recent desicion to re-write the Catholic bible.  They said they would not change the doctrine of it but, instead of calling Mary a virgin, there going to call her a young woman.  Seems like change in doctrine to me.  This along with the economic crash only secures by faith in Christ.  The world is truly becoming appuling and an abomination to the followers of Christ.  God Bless you all

Margaret, let me take another vector on a response. Let's remember that hard times and challenges have been present in every era of human history. Nations and empires have risen and fallen, earthquakes and volcanoes have destroyed entire cities. Plagues have come and gone. 

 

In our generation, especially in the Western Industrialized nations, we have had such prosperity and security that we have developed a feeling that we have overcome these things and so we (as a people and a general rule) look with a jaundiced eye upon stories in other countries where tsunamis wipe out hundreds of villages or an earthquake can kill 250,000 people in a day. 

 

Then, every so often something shakes our confidence and people begin to listen to the tabloid theologians or the doomsday profiteers. 

 

Preparation is good and wise. But, we want to be people who remember that God is in control and we can trust in Him. I have seen many miraculous deliverances from tragedy and have known many people who have survived through great trials entirely by faith. 

 

If an asteroid landed on my home, God is still sovereign and He is still faithful. If there is a worldwide economic collapse, God is still sovereign and He is still faithful. If the Caldera in Yellowstone erupts and destroys a third of the US, God is still sovereign and He is still faithful. If Libya, Egypt and Yemen fall into the control of rebels who cut off all oil exports to the west and the price of Gasoline goes up to $20 per gallon - God is still sovereign, He is still faithful and He will still be at work. 

 

God will take all things, and use them for His glory and for our ultimate benefit. 

 

Being prepared for these things is not always possible. But, we can do our best to prepare for difficulties and trust God for the rest. 

 

The most important preparation for us is always to have our hearts yielded to Almighty God, through Jesus Christ and to be completely trusting in Him.

Greetings all,

 

Food for thought: Faith and wise stewardship coexists. As pointed out already in this forum our world experiences various dissasters  periodically. Having a supply of water and a back up of food is wise. I live in Florida and we face the hurricane season every year. Having supplies is wise. Faith comes in to play by calming us as we rest in God in the face of chaos. If we are stockpiling out of fear that is opposite of faith. If we store up while resting in God that is stewardship. If we store up with the desire to provide for others, that is brotherly love.

 

Be aware, though, that if you stockpile and others do not and they find out you did, you can expect to not have yours very long either as the panic spreads. Don't expect people to act rational and humane in the midst of chaos.

I just got a not-so-delightful surprise..  My son went to the basement to pull some food out of our storage area..  and found that some mice had eaten through some packaging. This can happen with beans and rice also..  Make sure to store it in a container like tupperware with a good strong seal..  Lesson learned..

Hey bro.. didn't I give you that mouse several months ago and you made fun of him?  he's cute....  real mice are actually really cute too, i just don't want them eating our food. ;-)

 

the sad thing is we have two cats.. and they are not catching them apparently.. hmmm.  they
(the cats) had better earn their keep soon. :-)
