Greetings Brother Emmanuel,
Excellent question. It has been discussed or debated for a couple thousand years.
Some Christians call the issue - "Once saved, always saved".
My personal feeling (after years of study and discussion of all the possibilities) is that a TRUE BELIEVER cannot become a apostate.
My position is based upon the fact that the so-called Christian was not a tried and true believer to start with. They might have looked good. they might have sounded good. They might have even smelled good. But , they were not really GOOD.
Matthew 7:21-23,"Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of
My Father Who is in heaven.(22) Many will say to Me on that day,""Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles"? (23) "And then I will declare to them," I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness."
1 Corinthians 15:1-2,"Now I make known to you, BRETHREN, the Gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, (2) by which also you are saved, IF YOU HOLD FAST the word which I preached to you, UNLESS YOU BELIEVED IN VAIN. ( vain: empty, worthless, without effect)
Also, please read Jesus` parable about the sower in Matthew, Chapter 13. He explains why people start out "believing", but fall
away shortly after, for various reasons.
Colossians 1:23,"IF indeed you CONTINUE in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not MOVED AWAY from the hope of the Gospel that you have heard ......................"
Grace and Peace.
Brother Emanuel,
I must say that I agree with Richard on this one. He brought up the parable of the Sower in Matthew 13. That would be a good place to start studying the issue. It helps you to see that those you see falling away were not the ones that Christ referred to as being good soil. However, I will tell you that you are in a good place. There are some really good teachers on this site. If you respond with your doubts and questions I am confident you will get good answers. God will speak to your heart. He wants you to know that you belong to Him.
