I am sure this has been covered but in case not, I am going to put in a couple of cents worth. I agree with David's 2nd argument which was St. Augustine view. My position is this:
God did not create angels with the ability to procreate. I think this is explained in the Lord's discussion in the Gospel letters of Matthew, Mark and Luke. In a discussion with the scribes a question came up about who would be a man's wife in heaven if he had several here on earth. That discussion is not of interest here except for something Jesus said concerning that. He said:
Mark 12:25-26
25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. NIV
This does not prove that angels cannot procreate but we are certainly introduced to that idea. The primary purpose of marriage was for this exact purpose. The two will become one. I do not believe that can happen with angels. In heaven we will not be male and female, we shall be like the angels with neither the desire or ability to procreate. That part of our lives will be over. Today, that strong desire to procreate leads us to be in much the exact same conditions as they were in the days of Noah. People are marrying, divorcing, marrying, divorcing and on and on we go. This was never God's will and still is not today. He does forgive us for our weaknesses but certainly is not happy with the present situation.
About those men of renown: we still have them but today they compete on the football fields and basketball courts. They become like gods to some. Can you imagine the stories some have of their heroes? These men could probably compete very well with warriors of old.
My position is that angels do not have the ability to procreate but I am also of the mindset that it doesn't make any difference. What is, is. What we think doesn't change anything. The purpose of the account is not to tell us about angels and women but about the evil of man. I do not think the actions of angels brought judgment upon the earth. I am confident that it was the wickedness of man that caused God to be sorry and destroy the entire human race with the exception of the eight. He will do it again but not by water. I am surprised that He has waited this long but I do see the wickedness of man increasing. The nice things about men mating with animals or one with another is that they are not able to procreate. That is reserved for a man and a woman. God has the wisdom to know what He is doing. If angels could procreate, I guarantee they would find some willing partners in this day and age.
That's my take. Take that and eight bits to McDonald's and you can get a nice cup of hot coffee.
Roy
In other words, Margaret, you can take my opinion along with a buck here in America and go to McDonald's and buy a cup of coffee. That is just another way of saying my opinion is not worth anything.
You are certainly not the first one that believed angels and mankind mated. I don't see it but respect your opinion. I am not denying what Scripture says; I just don't believe it is talking about angels. Angels cannot procreate (in my opinion.)
Blessings,
Roy
Margaret,
Are you saying, then, that man can mate with animals and produce offspring? Yes, you are correct. The picture of the mouse with an apparent ear growing out of its back is not authentic. There was no interbreeding that produced the effect. I simply do not believe that angels and man can mate and produce offspring. Angels cannot procreate or produce seed. However, some very reasonable people do buy into that explanation of Genesis 6:4. I am amazed by that.
The fact that there were giants as a result doesn't prove anything. Giants were also produced after the flood. Goliath was reported to be nine and a half feet tall. He was a very big man.
However, I am not convinced that demonic activity didn't have something to do with this. But, it would have had to be through men and not the angels themselves. However, angels within themselves, cannot have sex with women. That, of course, is my opinion.
The only people that I know of that would say that animals and humans can mate would be the evolutionists who believe that the neanderthals and man mated and produced a superior offspring. Nonsense!
As far as I know, the differing genetics between animals and man does not allow them to mate. Different kinds of animals cannot interbreed either. In order to interbreed, the two animals must be very closely related such as a horse and a donkey. A dog and cat, for example, cannot interbreed.
This is the way God has made us and man's experimentation is proof enough that God used wisdom to make us this way. Give man a millimeter and he will take a mile.
Blessings,
Roy Wilson
