Who is Paul referring to when he boasts about his labors and about not having love? In what state of being was Paul in?
In the following passages from the Bible Paul says this,
2 Corinthians Chapter 13:27-29
In toil and in hardship, through hunger and thirst, through frequent fastings, through cold and exposure. And apart from these things, there is the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weak? Who is led to sin, and I am not indignant?

1 Corinthians Chapter 12:27-30
Application to Christ
Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Strive for the greatest spiritual gifts.
The Way of Love
But I shall show you a still more excellent way.
Chapter 13:1-3
If I speak in human angelic tongues, but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Who has the ability to speak in angelic tongues, but does not have love? Who would sound like a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal without love? Who has the gift of prophecy, can comprehend all mysteries and has all the knowledge? Who has all faith, but does not have love? WHO HAS EVERYTHING AND HAS GIVEN UP EVERYTHING BUT DOES NOT LOVE?
MIGHTY IS THE POWER OF THE CROSS NOW MAY YOU UNDERSTAND THIS POSTING.

He was defending his Apostleship, he was being attack by false prophets.

Stacey, Paul may not have had any particular person or type of person in mind when he penned these pastoral admonitions, but it's evident that there were divisions in the Church based on the status or esteem that certain gifts or talents were given by others. You may see it in the Church in our day, how certain members become more highly esteemed, and even more highly paid, according to the gifts they manifest. Prophecy, healing, preaching, singing, etc. can certainly seem like they make some members more important than others. I think that there are also counterfeit spiritual gifts in the outward church. Not everyone who appears to be prophesying or healing is truly doing so. Not everyone who is making money from preaching or singing is necessarily doing it primarily to win others to Christ. Paul was a man who had no phony motives. He made no money from what he did for the Body of Christ, and he was not always appreciated. He had enemies and it broke his heart.
