All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

My daughter-in-law asked me this weekend a question on Genesis Chapter 11 that I could not answer. Hopefully someone here can help.

In Ge. 11:5 'But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. Question: How did the LORD come down? ...in what form?

In HIS Service,

I would ask them if they have asked God the question? Or have you gave God the Nod. He wants to be a part of every decesion we make .He wants us to have counsel with Him as well as fellowship.Notice He said let us go to A group Three Trinity a three cord. o my God we will hold church right here.
When one suggests "if they asked God the Question", I would rather suggest - Do you regularly read and search the Scriptures? The Scriptures contain all of God's revelation for us enabling us to know what we are to believe about God, and the duty God requires of us all. To go beyond that would be to suggest THE Revelation in the 66 Books of the Bible is inadequate and we need a "new" revelation from God. That is dangerous ground because it is always subjective on the part of the one suggesting it. The fanciful is not always the factual - as a matter of fact = it almost never is...
The lens that we have to view this type of thing through is at best extremely poor. The reason the Bible starts where it does and not in Romans is not an accident. There is an attempt at the onset of the letter to give us a concept of what God is like. This is the key to understanding who and what God is. Every view we have of God forms in the idea of a similitude. The very idea of what this being called God is tainted by our exposure to sin and the curse. The idea of what Adam originally was cannot be grasped by our fallen minds. This is not getting off the point of who came down to look at a thing that was built. We are given hints as to what that is but they are just hints. I ask the Mormon boys this question when they infer that they know what God looks like. That question is do we have a sample of the things that God walks on or of what he breathes. The lack of these things being in our passion precludes us from making a statement of fact about what God is. The fact that God created time is a clue that there is more there than we can understand.
Do I believe that Abraham cooked food for three heavenly beings, absolutely. Do I believe that God came down to see what the boys were building again absolutely. We are admonished to entertain strangers for by doing so we will from time to time entertain angels. This is a western thing that we think we are so grown up that we will know when an angel is at the door.
I finish with this account, a friend of ours was going into the grocery store and there was a street person asking for money. Our friend told the street person he would give him no money but would be glad to buy him some food to which the street person agreed. Our friend went in to the store, purchased some things for the street person, and went out to give the groceries to that person. The street person thanked him for the groceries and said let us pray and thank God. This person said a prayer and when our friend said amen and looked up the street person was not there.
Hi Alan I have heard a similar story about angels. Isn't it great to know that we are not alone?

Usually God would "come down" in spirit form. However, there are many occasions in the OT where God appeared in a more physical manner - (a) the burning bush; (b) the shekinah glory cloud; (c) a pillar of fire; (d) a still and quiet voice, etc. It depended on the circumstance and the number of people to be addressed. I suspect that everyone in the vicinity of the Tower of Babel was impacted when God "came down"

IMHO JP
What a great summary of the different ways that God came down. Thank you peripheral.
Thanks Candice, for you comment. I am trying not to build towers in my life, that could cause the Triune God to come down and discipline me. Yet, I am grateful for HIS correction... only sometime, just a little 'slow' getting the point. Oh well, I rest in HIS love and seek HIS face toward HIS ever increasing revelation. God bless.
