There's a growing trend in Christianity to shy away from studying and sharing what the bible says.
What is your opinion in regards to knowing scripture?
Is it important that we know what the bible says?
Is there any benefit to memorizing, studying and recalling scriptures from the bible?
Does knowing what it says make a difference in your 'every day' living?
Do you watch Christian movies and listen to Christian music as a replacement of bible study, and do you think that's enough?
Do you think it's outdated, offensive, over-used, not relevant or boring?
Psalm 119:11
Colossians 3:16
Psalm 37:11
John 15:7
Joshua 1:8
Proverbs 30:5
2 Tim 3:16
Acts 17:11
2 Tim 4:3
What are your thoughts?

Your comment:
"I believe its important to understand what the word says however knowing every scripture verbatim not so much. I believe you don't need to be a walking, talking bible in order to evangelize. As long as we have a good understanding of what the word says and represents enough to lead a lost soul to Christ that's what matters the most. Jesus wants our hearts, he's not concerned with what we memorize from the bible. As we all know anyone can memorize a scripture and may know what the entire bible says and not have a pure loving heart."
really echoes what Axe said above:
"It's good to know scripture, sure--but I think it's even more important to understand scripture--to know what the Bible says, and not just what is written in it. A lot of evil has been done (and is still being done) in God's name by people who know what is written in the Bible, but don't have a clue as to what the Bible says."
Amen and Amen
Bible studies are absolutely wonderful and can be spiritually enrichening.
I agree Bill. When I do bible studies I gain wisdom from out of this world. ;-).
Yes Carla, self reading, Bible study in a group can lend itself to spiritual awakening, because we need to know God's heart, what He expects of us as well as the things that He has for us.
I agree. I’ve mostly only studied in groups and it’s very fulfilling and enlightening. I’m presently doing two studies. The first one is Revelation, it’s in a group (same group of ladies I’ve been with for many years) and the second one is Daniel. I’m studying Daniel alone... it’s a nice side dish to Revelation. Both are fascinating.
Personally, I think that if you are in a good group that is being lead by the Holy spirit, you have such a better chance of personal understanding of what is being said. How many times do you recall or hear from someone else that you have been reading a long time and all of the sudden, wham, it becomes so clear.
I marvel at people that won’t read or study the bible.
Though I am not in a bible study group, I’d rather study on my own.
He says, be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. Ro.12. What I can’t understand is, how can one expect to renew their mind, if they don’t know what to renew it to. If they aren’t reading or studying the Word? I like what Napoleon Hill says in his book, “Think and Grow Rich” We know that the dominating thoughts of our mind, will eventually reproduce themselves in outward physical actions, and gradually transform themselves into their physical reality. And so, it is with our minds, if we don’t fill it with the Word of God, and meditate on it, whatever is dominating our thoughts, we will do.
I don’t know if you have heard this before about the un-renewed mind.
The un-renewed mind is always raging war against unbelief, always praying for faith, but never arriving. Talking unbelief, yet struggling to get faith, confessing failure, and at the same time confessing faith in the Word yet denying it is action, trying to believe, but never acting on the Word.
One can’t act on the Word if he hasn’t studied it, or know what it says. Therefore, it is very important that we keep the Word before us at all times.
He sent His Word and healed them. I believe it was for spiritual healing as well as mental and physical. Amen?

JB, It's better to study alone than not at all.
Blessings, Carla
You can never understand God or grow as a Christian unless you read His word.

Yes, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
That's why I love Pr.2:1-5.
I get a lot more out of it this way. Sometimes groups can turn into arguments.
