Probably but I must admit they're my favorite.
No. I wasn't ever addicted. I could take them or leave them. I use to watch every one they put out. Now they all are pretty much the same. I still watch shows like TV Series Walking Dead & such but most horror movies are pretty predictable. The Saw movies are pretty intense.
I think with something like this it depends on personal convictions.
A few random thoughts:
~If a horror movie points to the realities of the spiritual realm and causes us to be more aware of our need for Jesus, it could be okay to watch.
~There are probably more horror movies though that are pure nonsense, they seem to increase our tolerance for viewing things that are not good for us to see. When viewed too often they can cause people to be insensitive to those things and start to think they are not a big deal.
~Does God want us watching it?
~If we're watching with non-believers or teenagers, it could be an effective way to start a conversation. Do they believe in the Spiritual realm? Why or why not? What about evil in the world? What's the cause of it? etc...
If we're going to watch it, I think it would be beneficial to at least discuss it. Asking questions like; How accurate was the portrayal of the spiritual realm by what we see in scripture? Where do you think evil comes from? How do you feel watching all this darkness?
I have two boys, 14 and 18. Now that they are older they watch scary shows sometimes, but we always discuss them. My older son has moved into College residence, so we can't discuss it as often, but when I see him, he always has questions of this nature (I love that). My 14 year old is watching a show called 'Supernatural'. It's causing him to ask a ton of questions. He's able to discern the nonsense in the show, but also is developing an understanding of dark forces as it opens up conversations that we otherwise wouldn't have.
Everyone is on their own personal journey, and each person needs to have the freedom to be on that journey. For instance, I don't think it would be helpful to tell a teenager to not watch the show. I sit with him when I can and watch it with him. He knows I don't like the shows, but I'm happy to meet him where he is and do my best to answer his questions. It's helped us have some great conversations.
Consider these verses:
Ephesians 6:12
Philippians 4:8
2 Corinthians 10:5
http://www.dove.org/ is a great movie review website. I used it regularly when my kids were younger.
The important thing is to have discernment. Be obedient to God's leading and Holy Spirit conviction.
Blessings.
Ananya,
What do you feel God is telling you to do? Sometimes God will lead us away from things for a bit, but then he'll allow it again in our lives.
I know many good godly Christians who watch scary movies, (zombie and ghost) but I also know many who don't. I just don't like them, I never have. Even before I was a believer I didn't like them.
I think it just comes down to what you think God is telling you to do. Be obedient!
Since you are here asking, my impression is that God is asking you to avoid them for now (or maybe forever). Please pray thru it though.
Me, personally, I don't like shows that are supposedly the reality shows where they go to find these 'ghosts'. Me, I think they're stupid. They hear a creak of some old board & say, "Did you hear that?" Uh, yea, we all did idiot. A house that was built in 1850's is going to make all kinds of noises. Shows that reach out to the paranormal, psychics, anything along those lines - in my opinion - are a big No No.
Like Carla said, there are probably more horror movies though that are pure nonsense. If you can go to the TV, watch the shows keeping this in mind & watch it for pure entertainment & not let it deter your thoughts from the truths of the Word or our Lord, I think they are fine. But as you say, you were addicted to them, I'm not sure exactly what depth you mean so I can't answer for you. I believe you have to pray about this. One thing you need to ask yourself "Is it building up your spiritual life in Christ?" I know I said they are my favorite shows which don't build up my spiritual life in Christ but I can take them or leave them. My daughter is a drug addict - clean addict praise the Lord. But she wouldn't be able to go out & take a Xanax or 2. She's an addict. If this is the same for you in this area, you need to run as fast as you can. What was your type of horror movies, like the titles?
2 Corinthians 12
9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. 10That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Keep praying through it and being obedient.
It may be helpful to think of it in terms of being obedient, rather than missing out on something.
Blessings, Carla
1 Corinthians 6:12 (KJV)
12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
Romans 14:14-23 (KJV)
14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
15 But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
