For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. ?

9 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

This may be a ridiculous question but I have wondered about this often. This verse mentions two or more gathering in His name He will be in the midst of them. Some times when I pray I start thinking, shouldn't I ask someone to pray with me? What about the ones who have no one to pray with them? Does Jesus ignore the people who are alone? What does these verses mean? Thank you in advance for any answers.

Hi Janie,

We can understand the context by reading the above verses.

The idea that is commonly promoted is that if there are two or more people gathered together who agree on something, and they ask God for it in prayer, then Jesus will be present and God will answer their request, but that's not what it's about.

We know that Jesus is already present in each and every individual believer, so even if one believer prays, He is there already listening, so it can't be about God answering prayer.

It's about discipline in the church.

If the sinning brother did not make things right in the presence of two or three witnesses, then the case was to be brought before the church. If he refused to listen to the church’s decision, then he was to be thrown out of the congregation. I know that sounds harsh in our day because precious few churches practice discipline as Jesus instructed, but that is what we are commanded to do.

It is with this in mind that Jesus said that the Father would grant the request of two or more who gather together in Christ’s name and are in agreement on disciplining the erring church member.

Matthew 18

¹⁵“If your brother sins^[k], go and ^[l]show him his fault ^[m]in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. ¹⁶But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every ^[n]fact may be confirmed. ¹⁷If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as ^[o]a Gentile and ^[p]a tax collector. ¹⁸Truly I say to you, whatever you ^[q]bind on earth ^[r]shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you ^[s]loose on earth ^[t]shall have been loosed in heaven.

¹⁹“Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them ^[u]by My Father who is in heaven. ²⁰For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
