Forbidden what? ? ? ?

A question for curiosities sake...

Why is the apple considered the forbidden fruit?

I looked up some information on this. Wikipedia had some in depth thoughts. To summarize...

1. the forbidden fruit is not a fruit at all, but a metaphorical one, possibly the fruit of the womb

2. the fruit was often depicted as an apple, possibly because of a misunderstanding of, or a pun on mălum, a native Latin noun which means evil (from the adjective malus), and mālum, another Latin noun, borrowed from Greek μῆλον, which means apple.

3. the fruit was a grape, made into wine. The Zohar explains similarly that Noah attempted (but failed) to rectify the sin of Adam by using grape wine for holy purposes.

4. Proponents of the theory that the Garden of Eden was located somewhere in what is now known as the Middle East suggest that the fruit was actually a pomegranate

It keeps going...wheat, mushroom, flesh...

Not being a scholar, I have to wonder how those who profess to be can miss two very obvious details.

First, the "tree" (singular) that was in the midst (middle?) of the garden suggests one tree, not treeS, nor trees all over the world.

Secondly, if these trees were that prominent around the world, why bother guarding the garden?

Both trees were together, so when God sealed off the garden, everything in it was sealed.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Wikipedia is not a good source when doing serious research. It is opinions and editable. With that said I will make a couple of comments.

Most understand that the Bible does not call the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil an apple. In fact, the Bible never calls the fruit anything except by the name of the tree from which it comes. This is normal ...  apples come from apple trees, oranges from orange trees. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil will produce fruit after its kind ... a unique fruit that is the Knowledge of Good and Evil fruit.

One can only dismiss the tree and the fruit, including the whole account, if they read it allegorically as listed above. Thus, here what one believes to be true in God's Word will be determined by the type of hermenuetics is applied. Is one reading it at face value or allegorically to name two. If you read it as face value it must be a singular tree with a specific fruit. If it is read allegorically it is open to all kinds of interpretations. Regardless of what one believes we know that there is one truth in the end ... God's truth.

I read it at face value, see the account as true with it describing one unique tree that produce a unique fruit after the tree from which it originates. There is only one of these trees, as there is only on Tree of Life, and no human outside of the Garden of Eden has seen the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

I've always read it as one tree as well and the actual "fruit" type is not given. But it seems a widely accepted view that many have thought it to be an apple tree. I had never heard any of the other beliefs given by Wiki and really feel it's stretching to say the least.

The fact that Eve "ate" and then gave it to Adam and he ate, which also makes it ludicrous that anyone can link it to the flesh or sex. It's as if they completely ignore that part and that it's guarded now and not accessible.

Just goes to show the absurdity of how some like to "interpret" without real consideration of the facts actually presented.

Totally agree!

I have heard the interpretation that the fruit was metaphorical which I thought was a bit out there.

Metaphorical fruit. What's that taste like? :-o

It's def not fattening

Sounds like a pharmaceutical product that comes with a disclaimer that might sound something like this:

Taking this product will cause a revelation that you are nude, you will feel shame, your relationships will be altered and it will cause death. Other than that there are relatively few side affects.

Metaphorically speaking that is.

:-)

ROFL

LT you forgot one effect that some drugs cause...it can harm your unborn children. Eeep!
