All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

1 Timothy 2:12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who  was deceived and became a sinner 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

1 Corinthians 7:8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.

This topic has been discussed before, and I've often seen people bring up 1 Corinthians 7 as being Paul pointing out he was saying this, not God, but that in 1 Timothy 2, he doesn't qualify it as his words so it must be God's words.

As this verse came to mind, the very first word seemed to jump out in my mind...

I!

If Paul were speaking for God, wouldn't he have said, the Holy Spirit has shown me that..., or God has revealed to me that....?  Those who have long been against women teaching or leading use 1 Timothy 2 as the standard.  And while led by God, many in scripture also were speaking as men.  It is an account of Jesus, His disciples, prophecy, creation, etc.  By those who were there.  When we feel led by the Spirit to write (aka - what I'm doing right now), we write about what we witness and believe.  So why would we think Paul didn't also write things as he felt and believed?  In places, he said God told him something or the Spirit led him, so why do we assume those things when he does not say that?

I believe this verse is exactly as stated:

I (Paul - me, myself, I...alone) do not permit a woman to teach.

After all, Paul was living in a time where women were considered lesser creatures.

Also interesting to note:  Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who  was deceived and became a sinner.  In this he is correct...Eve was the one who was deceived.  Being the one who was personally told not to eat of the tree though, Adam WILLFULLY disobeyed and did what Eve did or told him.  All we know is she gave it to him.

Another thought regarding 1 Corinthians 7.  Paul said he would prefer all remain unmarried.  But what did God say?

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

I'll probably regret this, but I'm going to restate this with what I told someone in email and maybe people can understand why I gave up on it cause it wasn't addressing my concerns.

I'm just trying to understand Scripture...in context. Women teaching is just one area that shows none of us understand as much as we think we do. All through Scripture, Paul commended women who were in the ministry. Women leaders (like judge Deborah I think the name is) are spoken of with respect. Then Paul turns around and says women are to keep silent and not teach.

Therefore we end up with all these thoughts and "interpretations" but not always the truth.

One says Paul interjected his own opinions.

Another says he was only speaking about one particular woman since he switches from women to woman.

Another claims translation errors.

Another says he was only addressing the disputes in Corinth.

Another says only the OT is scripture according to Jesus.

Another says the women mentioned were special circumstances.

The list can go on.

And most all of them can make their point using Scripture. But all can't be right. Orrrrr, just to throw another monkey in the wrench....can they all be right and humans just don't have the capacity to understand?...my thoughts are higher than your thoughts.

No matter which is right or wrong or somewhere in between, one thing I know Scripture is clear on is not to argue them. I'm just trying to find out which of these others believe and specifically and Scripturally, why. How firm that belief is and how it developed or has it always been?

I'm trying to find some truth by weeding through all the different beliefs to see which lines up most with Scripture. I'm not wanting to debate a belief I'm still trying to figure out but get thoughts so I can ultimately come to a conclusion.

I hope that makes more sense.

It is all God's Word beginning to end. The Holy Spirit oversaw every aspect. We have various things recorded, such as Job's friends speaking. That is a recording of what they said and is different from when one selected by God to record the Bible speaks. What ever is written by Paul is not simply Paul's writing, it is guided by the Holy Spirit. Thus, we never view the human author as only sharing an opinion. When we begin down that trail you will find many usurping more and more authority over the Word instead of submitting to the Word.

Once we have determined that it is all God's Word then we must look at context (passage, book, Bible), language, culture, to whom is the message being sent, etc. This is vital to good hermeneutics. But, it all starts with how one views the authority of Scripture.
