All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

There is a song that has been out for a while now....I think it's called Jesus friend of sinners.

This bugs me...because all throughout the Bible sinners are not the friend of God.  I understand the fact that while we were still sinners that God begat His own Son to live and die for us.  But...is He our friend if we continue in sin?

Is there something that I'm missing?  Jesus is not the friend of sinners, in fact, the Bible discloses what happens to those who continue in sin.

Any thoughts or comments?

Hello watchman,

I’m not sure if you have listened to the song or not. In case you haven't, here are the lyrics to it…

Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away
We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth's become so hard to see
The world is on their way to You but they're tripping over me
Always looking around but never looking up I'm so double minded
A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

Yeah...

Jesus, friend of sinners, the one who's writing in the sand
Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands
Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees
Nobody knows what we're for only what we're against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast
For the leper and the lame; they're the reason that You came
Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast
But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

'Cause You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks Yours

And I was the lost cause and I was the outcast
Yeah...
You died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

This is one of my favorite songs, because it reminds me of where I was and what I am. We all sin every day, non-believers and believers alike, if we didn’t, there would be no need for Jesus. This song is primarily for the believers. I have taken the liberty of highlighting what is meaningful to me. He came for sinners, as you have mentioned in your post. I believe there is only one difference between believers and non-believers, which is, we as believers know our need of a Saviour and we understand what sin is.

I am an online university student my major is Christian Studies. In one of my courses the professor is a pastor. Four lesbians (who were open about themselves) began attending his church. He stated that his congregation as well as his staff loved them just as they were led by the Lord. He said that “Over the course of about 5 years we had two single lesbians and a lesbian couple attending our services and I instructed the congregation to do the same. Of the 4, three have come to Christ and are pursuing Jesus with fervor. They have left these lifestyles. Two of them have since married (men) and one is still waiting on the Lord. We never had to point fingers or preach harsh sermons. We just loved on them and let the word and Spirit speak for themselves.”

I believe with all my heart that, when we as the Body of Christ can love on all sinners just as this pastor and his congregation loved on these four lesbians; that we will see increase in the amount of sinners who have turned their hearts and lives completely over to Christ by making Him their personal Lord and Saviour.

I hope this somehow helps.

Lord’s blessings

Thank You for posting the lyrics Michelle.  I guess it's that statement that Jesus is friend of sinners.  That was a term that the pharisees gave to Jesus.  Yes, He came to save the lost, with that I have no argument.

How does the Bible describe the friends of Jesus?

There are buzzwords in the modern “church,” such as “unconditional love and "unity," which are flags waved high to get people to come into the “four walls.” They have also conformed to the notion the Jesus is a friend of sinners, and in order to show God's love, we must all do the same. A closer look into this modern doctrine reveals that it isn't part of the Gospel message at all, but is another “gospel” of the modern “church” to get people to come into the man-made church building rather than becoming temples of the Holy Spirit.

When Paul spoke the Gospel to the religious pagans in Athens in the midst of Mars Hill, he didn't wait to become friends first to “share his beliefs," but boldly spoke truth about their idolatry and need of repentance. No one knows how many chances they will get to speak to an unbeliever, so you speak as if it is your only time. You cannot be called an evangelist if your purpose is not to first bring the Gospel, but instead wanting to be friends with the world. This is an absurd method to abide by and not how the apostles conducted their evangelism, nor how they taught it to the Early Ekklesia. This does not mean we ignore developing friendships, but to grow in a relationship takes time and time is not something that we all have. It should be important to understand that friendships are not a necessity to bringing the Gospel message.

The problem in the modern “church” is the picture that they have painted of Jesus that does not line up with what Scripture says about Him. What most “sheeple” (people who believe that the four-walled building is the church) say and do are simply parroting what their pastors have told them, but they have never searched the Scriptures to see what they are saying is true. The popular phrase that, “Jesus is a friend of sinners” is not true. The phrase is cloaked in something that seems noble, but is actually a marketing ploy to fill “church” pews. A full “church” means that business is good in the world of “Churchianity.”

The phrase, “Jesus is a friend of sinners” can be found in the Bible, but in the right context was used to discredit Him. To say that Jesus Christ is NOT a friend of sinners will probably bring offence to many, but personal feelings on the matter will not change this truth.

By looking in the Word of God will reveal a different "gospel" that what the modern “church” is promoting.

Ye are my friends, IF ye do whatsoever I command you. – John 15:14

It should be quite clear who Jesus defines who His friends are. They are those who obey Him. Do sinners obey God? No they don’t. The Bible refers to sinners as children of disobedience.

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: - Ephesians 2:2

For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: - Colossians 3:6

A further in depth look at why Jesus is not a friend of sinners is further revealed in this verse:

Now we know that God heareth not sinners: - John 9:31

God does not hear sinners, yet many people claim the He is a friend of sinners.

The origin of the phrase that "Jesus is the friend of sinners" came from the religious leaders of Jesus’ day.

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? – Matthew 9:11

The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. – Matthew 11:19

But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? – Luke 5:30

The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! – Luke 7:34

Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. – Luke 15:1-2

And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. – Luke 19:7

By carefully examining the context of these verses reveal that it was the religious leaders that were accusing Jesus of having fellowship with darkness.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? – James 4:4

Jesus welcomed those who brought forth the fruit of repentance, but excluded those who didn't. The fruit of repentance is abhorring sin, and forsaking its ways.

If God is a friend to sinners, knowing that all have sinned, then how can He have any enemies?

Think about it. Jesus being a "friend to sinners" requires that God is all sinners’ friend. We should know that He isn't. That is why He said,

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? -Matthew 12:34

Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? – Matthew 15:3

This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. – Mark 7:6-7

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. – John 8:44

The picture that is painted by the modern “church” portrays Jesus as cozying up to sinners and being their “homeboy” and “B.F.F.” This is unsupported in Scripture. What is supported is that Jesus is only friends to those who OBEY Him and draws near to the HUMBLE. By portraying Jesus Christ as a “friend of sinners” is promoting a message that Jesus Christ never taught. A sinner who is a friend of God has no need to repent and turn from their sin because it convinces them that they are already acceptable to Him. Many are deceived into believing that “church” membership equates to being accepted by Jesus when it is really the acceptance of man and their traditions.

For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. – Psalm 5:4

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? – 2 Corinthians 6:14

I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. – John 12:46

I would encourage you not buy into the false gospel that is spewed from the pulpit in the modern “church.” The GOOD NEWS is about being no longer a slave to sin, NOT that “Jesus is your friend.” It is ONLY through that change that we can become truly a friend of God. Don’t fall for the agenda of the Antichrist that promotes this false gospel.

For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. – 1 Corinthians 11:4

The purpose of Jesus Christ is the Gospel message that He came to save the lost and His love will manifest in you when you repent of your sins and accept Him as your Lord and Savior. The true Gospel is in contrast with being a “friend to sinners.” That is why we don’t see Paul, Peter, John and Matthew etc..., joining in the chorus of accusers that Jesus is a “friend of sinners” like the Pharisees did.

For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens – Hebrews 7:26

It should be clear and evident in John 15:14 quoted earlier who Jesus' friends are (those who obey Him). His grace gives the followers of Jesus Christ the ability to do this.

Many believe that being a friend to the sinner is showing Christ’s love for that person, but being a "friend" to the sinner is completely different in context. A lot of people do not understand the accurate context of love; therefore, they embrace the false doctrine being a “friend to sinners.” Often having genuine love for someone requires the action to do something that others may not see as loving.

In Luke 7:36-50, Jesus was in a Pharisee’s house, and a woman who was a sinner came and washed His feet. The Pharisee tried to discredit Jesus when He allowed her to do this to Him, but what they did not understand was that this woman was in the process of conversion (repentance) from a being a sinner to a saint. The woman's action showed her humble and broken heart towards Him. It was this action that brought her into the righteousness of Christ.

And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. – Luke 7:50

The woman was a sinner before her experience with Jesus. Just like us, we were once sinners too, until He cleansed us and we put on His garment of grace. The Pharisees were blind to what Jesus was doing. It should be obvious that before the woman's conversion that Jesus was not hanging out with her, nor being her friend. Jesus did not try to build some relationship bridge first before He could convert her. Likewise, just as Paul spoke the Gospel to the religious pagans in Athens at Mars Hill for the first time, he didn't wait to become friends first to share his beliefs.

When we look at Jesus’ example of associating with sinners we see that He did visit and dine with sinners, but it was with the intent to preach the Gospel. If our intention is to do the same then that would be aligning with Scripture, but if the intention is to become “friends” with sinners, then that is not the Gospel. You cannot call yourself an evangelist unless your purpose first and foremost is to first bring the Gospel message.

Is becoming a relationship bridge (friendship) more important than boldly proclaiming the Gospel?

Most who boldly proclaimed the Gospel in Scripture were persecuted for doing so. Most don’t understand that boldly proclaiming truth will be an offence to many. The Apostles never went out first to try to make friends because the Gospel is not about us being a friend to sinners, but about repenting and turning from your sins. Through His grace we then become friends with Jesus, not before.

Why do most people believe that friendship is a prerequisite to salvation?

We cannot save anyone; the Gospel is about what Jesus has already done. We are not extensions of it. Being an extension is an attempt to add to what He has already done.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? and what agreement hath the temple of god with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Whereforecome out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. – 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

Righteousness has no part with lawlessness. There is no harmony with Christ and Satan. The temple of the living God has nothing in common with idolatry. A believer has nothing in common with an unbeliever.

Most “sheeple” want to believe that they have something in common with the unbeliever. The modern “churches” falsely promotes that being a follower of Jesus Christ is inclusive, but the message in Scripture is that it is exclusive. That is why “Jesus is a friend of sinners” is actually an advocate for the false doctrine universalism.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. – James 4:4

Jesus said that His friends are those who obey Him. He did not say the opposite.

Do you take a stand on what He said?

Either you believe this, or you are in contradiction Jesus’ words. Jesus has told us what will happen on judgement day:

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. – Matthew 7:23

Sinners are disobedient, rebellious and lawless people. The above verse reveals that Jesus is denying His so-called “friends.” Many see this as being unfriendly because it is easier to accept and believe in the universal “Jesus” who is “friends” with everybody (inclusive).

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath – Romans 2:5-8

Those who do not obey the truth are not accepted; therefore they are not friends of Jesus Christ (exclusive).

The Gospel is about reaching as many as possible and having compassion in your heart for the hurt and the lost.

True friends are people who we have harmony, partnership, agreement and things we have in common with. It is only after the sinner REPENTS as a response to the mercy of God that the characteristics of friendship with Jesus is possible. The contrast in James 4:4 is crystal clear. The only two men who were attested to be friends of God were Moses (Exodus 33:11) and Abraham (James 2:23), not from the mouths of the Pharisee’s.

Scripture does not contradict itself. Jesus wasn't the "friend of sinners," but of the HUMBLE. If Jesus was the “friend of sinners,” then He would have been the friend of the Pharisees who He considered the worst sinners of all.

If Jesus Christ is the eternal judge whose wrath is stored up for unbelievers, why would you say that He is their “friend” first?

It is putting the cart before the horse. The true Gospel is about REPENTING of your sins and then receiving the friendship of Jesus Christ. It is impossible for it to be the other way around unless Scripture is twisted. The modern “church” has become apostate because their whole false “gospel” that is promoted, which is about you getting all your “friends” INTO “church,” but the true Gospel is not about those going INTO temples made with man’s hands, but about becoming temples of the Holy Spirit. The promotion of “unity” in the “church” is about compromise, and has nothing to do with being in one accord with Jesus Christ.

Jesus is coming for His bride who will be without, spot, stain or wrinkle. The true Bride looks a lot different than what most of the masses believe it to be.

Some food for thought:

A little over a year ago, I posted a discussion regarding Paul's methods of bringing truth to people.

http://www.allaboutgod.net/forum/topics/what-does-paul-mean-in-1-co...

I'm quite sure Paul didn't compromise his morals and beliefs to reach the lost, and I asked How can we practice Paul's way of showing people the truth?

I found the discussion very edifying.

It is noteworthy to mention that Acts 15 reports some of the believers were Pharisees. Hopefully, some Pharisees did become saved through the grace of The Lord Jesus.

It's also noteworthy to mention the advice Paul himself gave in 1 Cor 7:

12 To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. 13 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you[b] to peace. 16 For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? ESV

Mischelle,

I was wondering if you would elaborate on something you said, "We all sin every day, non-believers and believers alike, if we didn’t, there would be no need for Jesus."

What is the difference between non-believers and believers then if we all sin every day?  Is one saved from the wrath of God because they said a prayer or believe in Him mentally?  Or is one saved because they have repented from their sin and are now a new creation in Christ, who flee from evil, who walk a different road, who are salt of the earth, who strive to enter thru the narrow gate, who labor, and fight against the flesh and walk in the Spirit of God.  Could you help me with this please?

If we get away from the particular term (title) and seek a basic understanding from Scripture relating to those who are of Christ and those who are not we will find the following:

There are the righteous and the unrighteous. (Matthew 5:45; John 5:28-29)

There are the children of God and those who are not. (1 John 3:10)

There are the saved and the unsaved. (Rom. 9:9-13)

There is a book called the Book of Life and the Bible is pretty specific when it speaks the following ...

Php_4:3  Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
Rev_3:5  He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.
Rev_13:8  All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.
Rev_17:8  The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come.
Rev_20:12  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

Rev 20:13  The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.
Rev 20:14  Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.

Rev_20:15  If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Rev_21:27  Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

From these few verses regarding the Book of Life we recognize that there are two groups of people, one in the Book and one not in the Book. We also recognize that there is two destinations for those two groups respectively.

Jesus came to seek the lost and to call sinners to repentance. Jesus spent time with them, but I would question the use of the term "Jesus, friend of sinners" as this really is not what is found in Scripture for if that were the case then we would have to have a different view of what is a friend, for Jesus is going to separate the sheep and the goats. Is He going to separate His friends into two groups and claim one for heaven and send one to hell? Does that make any sense that He would send friends to hell?

Thus, I go back to He came to seek the lost, but to put the friend label on that relationship distorts what is really happening there, for in life we will have many acquaintances and few true friends.

If we use Webster for definitions of the English language we find the following (selected for context and content):

Sinner: 2. It is used in contradistinction to saint, to denote an unregenerate person; one who has not received the pardon of his sins.

Friend: 1. One who is attached to another by affection; one who entertains for another sentiments of esteem, respect and affection, which lead him to desire his company, and to seek to promote his happiness and prosperity; opposed to foe or enemy.

Does Jesus seek to promote the happiness and prosperity of the sinner or does He come to convict and transform the sinner from a child of Satan to a child of God?

A lot of songs sound good and seem to promote a positive message, but we must always square it with Scripture and when we do this a lot of music fall short.

Lord Bless,

LT

Beyond the title we have some interesting lines to look at:

1. "The world is on their way to You."

What will the person of the world find according to Scripture if they reach Christ after death and did not find Him in life? If we recognize that the lost will be cast out into the Lake of Fire then at what point do we cease, based on the songs view of friend, seeing Christ act as friend?

2. "Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands"

This is incorrect. The Bible says that Pharisees brought the woman to trap Jesus. The Bible views the Pharisees repetitively as being self-righteous. It is true that Jesus did not condemn her (that is physical death in this account), but instructed her to go and sin no more. This interaction does not change the truth of Scripture relating to her eternal soul ... "the penalty of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 6:23)

3) You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast - For the leper and the lame; they're the reason that You came - Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast - But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet.

Overall sounds pretty good except that there is something missing here. He is grateful, but what about the understanding that he came (I hope and trust) to Christ through repentance. Jesus did not die so people would be saved and remain the same.

4) Nobody knows what we're for only what we're against when we judge the wounded.

Are the lost really just wounded and in need of fixing up or are they dead spiritually needing to be born again?

So the song IMO has effectively moved the Bible's call for a sinner to repent and be saved to a condemnation/rebuke of the church.

Now the flip side. There are things taken as single statements I can agree with, but cannot when they are put into context of the whole song. These are some of the single statements that by themselves would be OK:

1. Let our hearts be led by mercy
2. Help us reach with open hearts and open doors (depending on what is meant by "open')
3. Break our hearts for what breaks yours

4. What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did (One would have to define how He loved)

Lord Bless,

LT

Thank you for posting this topic Watchman. I'm learning from what you and LT have posted.  I was just telling someone the other day that sometimes music can seem angelic and Christ like but they needed to be careful because it could be misleading.  good topic...

Ribbon, :)

I really love you.  It is misleading and dangerous.

This song repeats the phrase Jesus is the friend of sinners at least 9 times in the lyrics....and I'm wondering why?  I don't know the duration of the song, but I can guarantee that it is a song that probably lasts 3-5 min. Repeating the same phrase over and over again always reminds me of someone that is trying to brainwash people.  Not saying that this is what this band's focus is...but it sure does seem that way.

Then they go on to seemingly be humble and then make some accusations against the Church, because of their beliefs...almost like condemning the Church for believing specific things.  This is what people listen to every single day & yes....it worries me too.

There's no doubt that God hates the wicked and that God will be as much glorified by their destruction through experiencing God's wrath as God was glorified by the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Who experienced God's wrath as a Substitute for those whom God saves.

In my POV, since the lamb was slain from the foundation of the world, God is only seeking and saving those whom He foreknew. They are His friends, even when they were separated from God and dead in their sins, for to God, Who sees the beginning from the end, it is already a done deal. John 15:13

I think, for those who are truly in Christ, then they will truly hate sin and truly want to stop sinning and truly long for the day when they will no longer battle the flesh or temptation. There's a difference between supporting a "sinning Christian doctrine" and humbly admitting that one's flesh wants what it wants and one sometimes gives in to it even though God always provides a way out.

Saint Paul never forgot that he had sinned against God and had obtained mercy. He felt that the grace of The Lord was abundant in saving him, and said that his salvation was a pattern to them which should believe on Him to life everlasting. He certainly fought the good fight, and I'm sure some of that fight included the battle between spirit and flesh as well as enduring the hardships and persecutions and many trials as he proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

I know that when Jesus died on the cross, He had to feel the weight of sin that is committed and if someone is one of His, one Whom He foreknew, then He saw them personally and saw their life and felt the weight of every sinful act they have personally committed, or might yet commit, from birth to death, and I don't know what the full wrath was that He endured, but I know it means each sin that one commits from this moment on is another sin He felt and paid for on the cross. So if all stop sinning now, it would mean His suffering was less. Who wouldn't want to stop? Who wouldn't feel bad for sinning. Who wouldn't want to change and ask for the power to not go in their own strength anymore but to be filled with His power and presence? Only those that aren't true believers IMO.

agreed!
