All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Greetings all,

I will continue to try something on TheNET. I would like to see if we can engage in a Bible study using the forums. I hope to simulate a small group setting, but realize that there will be lag time. Here are the parameters that we will work with ... and this is open to everyone.

1) We are attempting to work our way through the gospel of John.

2) We will not tolerate negative comments made about a person or persons.

3) We are using the S.O.A.P. approach which = Scripture - Observation - Application - Prayer.

... 3a) Scripture text from the Gospel of John using KJV (no copyright attached)

... 3b)Observations about the particular text. What is being said, what is going on, who is involved and what might be the points being made?

... 3c) Application of the text/teaching to our lives today.

... 3d) Prayer pertaining to that which we have sought to discern.

4) It is appropriate to ask questions along the way.

5) I operating as the facilitator and teacher of this online group/class, but want the open participation of others.

6) At the end of each week (Friday's) I will close the current one and start a new one.

Joh 4:1-26 KJV  When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,  (2)  (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)  (3)  He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.  (4)  And he must needs go through Samaria.  (5)  Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.  (6)  Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.  (7)  There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.  (8)  (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)  (9)  Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.  (10)  Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.  (11)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?  (12)  Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?  (13)  Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:  (14)  But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.  (15)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.  (16)  Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.  (17)  The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:  (18)  For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.  (19)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.  (20)  Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.  (21)  Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.  (22)  Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.  (23)  But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.  (24)  God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.  (25)  The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.  (26)  Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

In reading this, my first thought is wow, Jesus didn't take the time to confront the Pharisee's that were against Him, He instead took His time to do the will of God, preach.  To the Samaritan woman....I keep wondering what went through her mind in this conversation, but we can well see, that she didn't think to lie to Jesus, she spoke the truth.  And He said to her, "Thou hast well said, I have no husband, [but He didn't stop there, he went on to list the number of husbands she had and then told her that the one she was with wasn't her husband].  Not only did He praise her sincerity, but He pointed out her sin.  I wonder if I was the one sitting at the well?  He spoke to her and said those who worship me no longer have to go upon a mountain or Jerusalem, but in Spirit and in Truth.  Then I think of Jesus' reply to the one who handed Him over, For I have come to be:ar witness of the Truth.  Wow!  I can't imagine her joy at being included into this moment in time.

John 18:37-Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

LT, the Book of John is so interesting.

Verse 26, "Jesus saith unto her, "I that speak unto thee am He."

Please notice who Jesus is telling that He is the Messiah.........a woman.....a ("hated") Samaritan woman.

Also, later in this book, John  20:16, "Jesus said to her,"Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher)."

Mary Magdalene, another woman, who Jesus had cleansed of an infestation of evil spirits.........was the first to see and speak with the risen Savior.

Jesus trampled all over  Old Testament practices and beliefs about women being inferior and unimportant.

A good lesson of Him dealing with ridiculous prejudices and discrimination..... that some people still hold.

Grace and Peace.

Richard, the case of "...Old Testament practices and beliefs about women being inferior and unimportant..." was more a matter of culture of the people and their hardened hearts than a matter of the Old Testament. Scripture gives us role distinctions between husband and wife, but nowhere that I read does it make women inferior. That was the practice of man, not the intent of God. Rather, I see repeatedly that God commands men to care for the least among society, to ensure the safety and provision for orphans and widows.

So a story goes:

This new bride to be, was really impressed with the phrase in First John 4:18, "Perfect love casts out all fear".

She told the baker of her wedding cake to put "I John 4:18" as a fitting topper for the cake.......and their marriage.

Unfortunately, the baker was not very knowledgeable about the Bible.........forgot, and failed to apply the "I" with the rest of the book and verse on top the cake..........resulting in - John 4:18.

At the reception, the best man was asked to take a Bible, and read to the  crowd of guests what the message on top the cake meant.

He solemnly read, "For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.".................

Ooohhhhhhhhhhhhh HOW did I miss this???!  LOL  This is a keeper.

Interestingly enough, this was our lesson in Sunday School this week.  Two points made I'd like to share are:

  1. What thing was it Jesus said that made the most impact on the woman at the well?

The lesson explains how the Samaritans were so avoided by the Jews that they would travel a long way out of their way just to go around Samaria as they would not step foot there.  So Jesus even asking this woman for a drink was the most impacting. Besides being a Samaritan, she was a woman.  And drawing water during the day, when it was hottest, meant she was avoiding drawing at the same time as the other women, early in the morning, because she was ashamed, which meant she had a certain lifestyle.  So to have a male Jew speak to her, and not only speak, but ask her for a drink, was very shocking to her.  It caused her to question what kind of man is this.
  2. How did Jesus react to His disciples coming back to find Him speaking to this woman?

He didn't.  We often react to what others think of how we act or what we do.  But Jesus didn't react to a lot of what people said or thought.  He wasn't phased by what was on others' minds but what was on His Father's mind and heart.
