All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Ok,the JWs say the Holy Spirit isn't a person because He doesn't have a name.

They say the Father=Jehovah, the Son=Jesus [or sadly they say He is Michael] but they say since the Holy Spirit doesn't have a name He isn't a person.

How do I answer that rebuttle?

I really like your suggestion. All of it.

Praise Jesus! Thanks everyone I think I understand now. :-)

Breathe,

I found when I was talking with them that consistency is best. Stick to the Word of God that you know by heart. Don't allow them to get you flustered. Always remember, that when we answer with the truth of the Word of God that is the best we can do.

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats[b]; do not be frightened.”[c] 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.

1 Peter 3:13-18

I hope this helps

Thank you. I really appreciate those scriptures, sister. :-)

It's what we do sweet sister. You are in my prayers.

For anyone, such as the JW's,  to say that the Holy Spirit isn't a person because he doesn't have a name is utterly ridiculous.  Many of us were born without names.  Does that mean we didn't become persons until we were given a name by our parents?  Of course not!  That's not even an argument worth responding to because it's foolish on its face.

We have names to distinguish ourselves from one another, but there is only one God (manifested in three distinct persons with a shared nature and purpose) who is the supreme being, without beginning or end, the creator of all things.  We know him as God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit (a.k.a. Spirit of truth, Helper, Comforter, Advocate).

The idea that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force and not one of the three persons of the Godhead is flatly contradicted by the Scriptures.  Jesus himself said this: "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you" (Jn 14:15-17, NKJV).

I don't take any of the claims of the JW's seriously or consider them worth responding to because they do not know God.  Their entire belief system is based on heresy; biblical passages taken out of context, including their own translation of the Bible selectively edited to conform to their perverted and twisted beliefs.  Among them the belief that Jesus is Michael the Archangel.  The Bible clearly and undeniably does not support this fatal misconception about the nature and identity of Christ.  For 20 centuries (despite divisions that have led to a proliferation of denominations) orthodox Christianity has held firmly to the biblical teaching that Jesus is God incarnate, fully God and fully man, the second person of the trinity.

I'd say they're right.  The Holy Spirit is NOT a person, anymore than God or the Son of God.  JESUS was a person WHILE here on earth, but He is the only one who came down in the flesh.  Other than that, they're God, they're above the rank of "person".

Aside from that however, they have nothing better to speak of, so they find things to debate and argue that really don't matter to salavation or becomes any type of useful knowledge for them.  Like some suggested, they just do it to throw people off topic and confuse and bait.

The Holy  Spirit is a person. He has the attributes of personhood, performs the actions of  persons, and has personal relationships. He has insight (1 Corinthians  2:10-11). He knows things, which requires an intellect (Romans 8:27). He has a will (1  Corinthians 12:11). He convicts of sin (John 16:8). He  performs miracles (Acts 8:39). He  guides (John 16:13).  He intercedes between persons (Romans  8:26). He is to be obeyed (Acts  10:19-20). He can be lied to (Acts 5:3),  resisted (Acts 7:51),  grieved (Ephesians  4:30), blasphemed (Matthew  12:31), even insulted (Hebrews  10:29). He relates to the apostles (Acts 15:28)  and to each member of the Trinity (John 16:14Matthew  28:19; 2  Corinthians 13:14). The personhood of the Holy Spirit is presented without  question in the Bible

I don't see personhood being the same as a person anymore than I see people being like Gods I guess.  That is why I don't claim Him to be a person in the sense that we are persons, or it somehow brings Him down to our level instead of seeing Him as greater.

a 'person' is not the same as a 'human'.

Jesus was also a person and He is also God...

Hmm, that may be how the JWs are kind of taking this matter.  I don't know anything about JWs, but they may be arguing this "personhood" based on seeing a person as a human being.  That's how I view the word person.

They believe Jesus is Michael the archangel by what I understand. ...someone correct me if I am wrong.
