I wasn't really sure where to put this, but this article on CNN came up today and it really bothered me. It's about a human skull they found that is supposed to be an ancestor of ours. I don't like to read things that could shake my faith, but this bothers me and it makes me wonder whether or not we really evolved but it was just done by God's hand. I mean if we really were created then why all of these controversies with the human skulls and our supposed ancestors? Anyone?

The first verses of Genesis:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.* 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”
And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

For the record, I also hold to a literal 6 day Creation.
However, as we read the above scripture we see that the element of time was not in existence until verse 4. So if someone wants to say that the earth is older, I won't argue it or divide over it... As David says, it doesn't change God's character, and it doesn't challenge or undermine the validity of the scriptures.

I'm just going to have to look at all the doctrines I've considered as being essential doctrines and determine if the opposing arguments change the character of God or not and go from there. Thanks for sharing your position.

Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom. It helped a little. I just think it is important that we are informed of these things because if we are trying to minister to other people, we might have to explain these things. Sometimes confusing things like this can lead people away from God as opposed to toward Him.

I believe there are essential doctrines that form the primary basis of the Christian faith -- the deity of Christ is one. These essential doctrines are absolute truths and we are to know them and we are to believe them. Denial of one or more of these essential doctrines is actually a denial of Christ and the Christian faith -- at least that's what I thought, and I have believed that to deny an essential doctrine, it raises the question is that person really a genuine follower of Christ? Only God knows the heart. Perhaps the person will be led into these truths eventually. That's why we are to make disciples. Disciples are students. I've already mentioned the Doctrine of Man. Is it essential? I'm not sure now.
Now, I must make sure that the essential doctrines which I have believed as being essential are actually essential (LOL) and that I've correctly interpreted them as such. I certainly don't want to deny Christ. But I don't want to divide over a preference either.

I understand the Doctrine of Man to be that all humans are created in God's image, separated from God as we are born into sin and only the Holy Spirit can cause us to see our sin nature and lead us to repentance. I believe that this is an essential doctrine. I don't see how it affects the age of the earth.

It's Anthropology and is about the origin of man as well. It's nothing to do with the age of the earth for in six days, God may have created a fully aged earth. However, in my initial post I was asking why the six literal days of creation is not an essential doctrine. This discussion is about evolution which encompasses the origin of man. If one part becomes debatable, then how do we decide where we can draw the line? Obviously, when the nature of God is changed by the opposing arguments.
Here is an outline of Anthropology -- the Doctrine of Man -- which seems to me to be very biblical at this time. I just need to study this more. My faith is being re-built and I have believed lies, and God has been showing me truths, little by little.

Is Jonah's experience in the belly of a fish essential? What about the parting of the Red Sea? Is that important? We are told that Jesus fed 5,000 men plus women and children with five loaves and two fish. Is God only showing us that Jesus is our provider or should I really believe Jesus did that?
How important is that story to you? Is it critical? Is it essential to our faith. We know that is physically impossible. Do we really need to believe that He actually did that? Is that necessary to faith?
Is the only miracle essential to our salvation a belief in the literal resurrection of Jesus after three days necessary to my faith? Do I need to believe it happened as recorded? Just how important is believing in these physically impossible feats necessary to my faith?
Scripture tells us that the Lord told Abraham that he would have a child at the age of one hundred. Of course that is physically impossible. However, Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. He tried the compromise earlier and it didn't work. He was credited righteous simply because he believed God's Word. I don't think we can be credited with righteousness with the spirit of picking and choosing what miracles I choose to believe. Exodus 20:11 tells us that He created this universe and all life in six days. I think it is essential to believe that.
Why is it that we are so ready to believe in every miracle recorded except this one? Is it because we are intimidated by some scientist that says the universe is 13.7 billion years old? Are we afraid to offend someone? I think you are being very risky telling someone that this one verse may not mean what it says. When I dismiss this one, where do I stop? I think we have just about gotten to the point that the only miracle we say is off limits is the resurrection of Christ. All the rest don't really matter.
I believe a case can be made that our salvation is dependent upon believing God's Word. This idea that we only have to believe certain things in His Word is a very dangerous one. I really do not believe we should be going there.
