All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Ok so I'm confused and I've prayed about it (and still finding answers to my questions, both in the bible and articles-checking them asgainst scripture) but I also am open to what people here think about this topic of keeping the sabbath.

I've read both sides of the arguement on extreme sides(both with scripture to back it up, althought the pro sabbath keeping arguement has no exact verse in the New Testament to support that sabbath keeping is still applicable like the other 9 commandments) and have tried to look at it from a non baised opinion

But the thing that has left me in the middle of this "argument" is that Jesus never reiterated the importance of the sabbath like He did with the other commandments, where he transformed most of them i.e. lust = adultery, anger = murder etc.

I know the we are not justified before God by works but by faith only.

The more I read the beliefs of Sabbatarians the more i see that they aren't keeping the sabbath in fear and respect of God but they are keeping it in fear of losing salvation.

Recently I was having this discussion with someone who keeps the sabbath and made a video insinuating that people who don't observe the sabbath will get the mark of the beast and he said "The Bible says that if we don't keep the commandments, we cannot be saved" after I said Jesus saves, not the sabbath.

Here's the video:

Hi Jordan,

To start with.....seems to me many folks are confused on which day is actually the Sabbath - Saturday, or Sunday.

The Jews (and some Christians) worship God on the seventh day (of rest) and call it the Sabbath. The Bible supports this.

Some Christians, as they worship  God, call Sunday the Sabbath. The Bible does not support this day as the Sabbath.

Most Christians call Sunday - the Lord's day. This was the day Jesus was resurrected from the tomb. Also, this was the day the apostle John was transcended up to heaven in the Book of Revelation.

Jesus says in Matthew 12:8, "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath".

Those who speak of one losing salvation are probably basing their position on Hebrews  Chapters 3 and 4........dealing with unbelief and disobedience, just as many of the early Hebrew people did.

My position, Bro, is that Jesus has become a Christian's Sabbath rest, and He is our Lord and Savior every day of the week, year around.

Also, Jesus spelled out the two greatest Commandments in Matthew 22:37-40. He said "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

Grace and Peace.

Hi Richard,

That's a good point you raise with which day is the sabbath. And I have a question for that specifically out of curiosity, would time be relative to where you live? And is the biblical seventh day mearsured from the biblical region?

In 1 John, he refers to God's commands, which commands are these? Are they the commands of Jesus? Because in John 14: 10 Jesus says, " Do you not believe, that I am in the father and the father is in me? The words that I have spoken to you do not come from me. The father, who remains in me, does his own work."

I'm following the two commandments that Jesus said. they cover what a Christ follower must do, in order to walk in God's love

Thanks for the reply. And yeah I do share the same position as you.

FB,

Along with what Richard said we understand that for the Christian there is a new Sabbath rest given to us and that rest is in Jesus Himself as He is our Sabbath:

Heb 4:1-16 NIV84  Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.  (2)  For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.  (3)  Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.  (4)  For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."  (5)  And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."  (6)  It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience.  (7)  Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."  (8)  For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.  (9)  There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;  (10)  for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.  (11)  Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.  (12)  For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  (13)  Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.  (14)  Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  (15)  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.  (16)  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The focus of this passage is "Jesus" our Sabbath rest that we enter into, for the seventh physical day comes around every week, but we are to enter "into" this "another day" (v.8) which is referring to Jesus Himself.

Thus, the 4th Commandment is not broken by us who are His children when we meet on Sunday or any other day, for He is our Sabbath and we are to rest in Him.

Thank you for this answer. Many don't understand this rest, Jesus is our Sabbath. I pray for more and more enlightenment on it. It's so important, I believe.

Thanks LT

I've seen people use Hebrews 4:9 out of context as a justification of "adding" it to the New Testatment commands that Jesus gave and that keeping the sabbath is still a must. I guess they missed Hebrews 4:3 and Hebrews 4:10. Thanks for your enlightening comment.

God bless

Jesus is indeed our Sabbath.  I have interacted with members of certain denominations who zealously maintain that observance of the Sabbath or water baptism is absolutely essential for salvation.  They do so to the extent that they become fixated or singularly focused on this one doctrine, which is elevated above all others.  Often, they go so far as to say that anyone who claims to follow Jesus Christ but does not agree with them is eternally damned.  This raises red flags for me that I am dealing with a cult or a borderline cult.

Here are several Bible verses that I believe will shed light on this question.

  • Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” ...  Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:2,5, NIV)
  • One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind (Ro14:5, ESV).
  • Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath (Col2:16, ESV).
  • Then he [Jesus] said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath" (Mk2:27, NIV).

Thanks Colby,

Yeah I think I attract those denominations too much that I bump into them either online or in the real world. But I feel for those who are enthusiastic about Jesus but get sucked into believing the doctrines of these denominations.

Most of their "ideas" are so similar that you can't differentiate one from the other

Indeed.  If only Bible-believing, born again Christians were as passionate about their faith as members of cults who've been duped by a false gospel. Further, many Christians know less about what the Bible teaches (even though we esteem it as the Word of God!) than cult members who've committed to memory many passages and often come across as quite knowledgeable.

The cults are adept at using Christian terminology (terms familiar to you and me but into which they pour very different meanings) to deceive and mislead.  You can know storm clouds are gathering when an individual or church body starts adding to, subtracting from, or otherwise perverting biblical teachings regarding God's plan salvation, claiming that they are exclusively the authentic church of Jesus Christ, and/or denying the deity of Jesus Christ.

The best thing we can do to guard against false and deceptive teachings is to know the Bible inside out.  Then, empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit, we can carefully scrutinize what we read and hear, testing it in light of the whole counsel of the Holy Scriptures, holding on to that which is true and rejecting that which false.

  • "Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the goodconfession in the presence of many witnesses" (1Tim6:12, NASB).
  • "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness andrespect" (1Pet3:15, ESV).
