All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

It seems to be a Catholic Belief that there are Mortal sins.  In my opinion they might be going a little over board by singling out sins as Mortal and Venial sins, however Biblically speaking I think they are on the right track, or at least they have a point to this whole thing.  But I'm curious how many of you believe in mortal sin, and what scriptures would you use to back up your view?  Also to those of you that don't believe in Mortal sin, what scriptures do you use to back up your view?

If you don't know know what Mortal Sin is, then before you comment, you will need to read about it.  Here is a link to a Wikipedia page on Mortal Sin.  Be sure to read the whole thing, and if you feel that you need to do more research, do so before you comment.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Rom. 3:23

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom. 6:23

The Bible teaches that all sin and only one sin separate us from God. We deserve eternal damnation but through God's love, grace and mercy we are offered salvation, for Jesus died on the cross shedding His blood paying for the penalty of our sin and redeeming us for the Word says that "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Rom. 10:13).

Therefore there is no list of sins that separate us or do not separate us from God. All sin cause that separation up until the time we are saved. After we are saved, for those of us who believe in eternal security, we understand that sin in our lives will cause us to become unusable for God, but our relationship is not dependent upon works to stay saved, but rather dependent on the work of Jesus Christ from beginning to end. We do not go in and out of a state of saved - unsaved - saved again - unsaved again - etc ...

We could debate the eternal effect of various sins beyond the separation it causes between the lost and God. There are effects experienced in this life and there is reason to believe that there will be various degrees of punishment in the Lake of Fire experienced by the lost person beyond being cast from God's presence eternally.

Gregory,

You are free to disagree. But, I will point you to a short passage and then give you some links to previous discussions on this topic.

I want you to attempt to reconcile your view regarding one going in and out of salvation in light of this clear passage with an understanding that in God's Word there are no contradictions only difficult things for us to understand:

Heb 6:4-9 NIV84  It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,  (5)  who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age,  (6)  if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.  (7)  Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.  (8)  But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.  (9)  Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case--things that accompany salvation.

One may attempt to argue one can lose their salvation or argue for eternal security, but one cannot argue that we can get saved, lose our salvation and get saved again. Even those who think salvation is only a future event have difficulty holding that view in light of this clear passage that one cannot be saved or come to repentance for salvation a second time.

I will post the links shortly after I look them up.

OK. Let's go deeper. Now read the text you quoted in context starting at chapter 9 and going through the end of chapter 11.

Excellent word ... and AMEN!!! God is good!!!

Mischelle,

:) The truth sets us free. Hallelujah!!!

A teachable spirit is a must, in this walk God has placed us in. Blessed be his name.

I did the same Michelle.  I had never heard of eternal salvation until I came here.  And I have come to accept it as truth.  HOWEVER, something else I have considered....

There is a thing about TRUE repentance.  Not everyone who says to me Lord Lord....

Sometimes I wonder if those who turn away ever truly repented.  We'll never know until we know fully then.

Char,

They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. 1 John 2:19

Corinthians 11:19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.

My understanding is that there are two kinds of sin, original sin and personal sin. The origin of sin for mankind occurred in Eden. It is said that original sin originated from the temptation and the desire to be like God. Therefore, sin is, more or less, rooted in idolatry. The biggest idol is Self. Yet, idolatry is placing any person or any thing in the place of God.

Original sin caused everyone born into the world to be born in a fallen condition, totally separated from God. That tiny baby, born only moments ago, even though the parents may both be born again Christians, is totally separated from God. As soon as the child is old enough to interact verbally and physically with the environment around him/her, the child will begin expressing the fallen nature, begin sinning. This is personal sin.

While some believe that there are degrees of sin that make one act worse than another and that God appears to detest some sins more than others, such as the ones listed in Proverbs 6:16-19, others say all sins are rooted in idolatry and anytime we choose to sin we are just placing the self in God's place. We know that all sin has the same penalty -- the wages of sin is death -- but perhaps in Hell there will be more suffering for those who committed more heinous sins. I don't know.

Here's a good article explaining if the teaching of mortal and venial sin is really biblical. We do need a biblical understanding of sin and my own understanding is likely incomplete. I'm still learning.

Hi Group. Grace and Peace.

Great discussion going here.

When a person says, "I'm saved!" Is that really true?

I appreciated Michelle's post on this. Seems to me there are many people sitting in churches, Bible studies, etc. during their lives here, and when the time comes, won't be carried by angels to paradise (Luke 16:22).

Was Judas a true believer? He lived with Jesus....observed countless miracles of His, yet was a thief and betrayer of the Son of God. But he looked good. Paul speaks to followers in I Corinthians 15:1-2, "Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, (2) by which also you are saved, IF you hold fast the word which I preached to you, UNLESS YOU BELIEVED IN VAIN." (NASB, caps added).

Greek for "vain" - empty, idly, without effect.

A true believer has the in-dwelling Holy Spirit in his/her heart , Romans 8:9, "However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, IF indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But IF anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him." (NASB, caps added).

That's why Jesus says in Matthew 7:21, "Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.".......and verse 23," And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness." (NASB).

I firmly believe that a true believer in Almighty God through His Son, Jesus Christ is permanently saved , and can look forward to eternity with Them.

And Gregory, here's how I read Romans 11:22, " Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, IF you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off." (NASB, caps added).

The joy of the Lord is our strength.................

When a person says, "I'm saved!" Is that really true?

Amen!  I had wondered this about someone.  I went through so much for so long that I at times thought I'd give up, and yet, not go back to what I was like/doing.  I mean, that was no better.  I had trouble then too, but honestly hated the way I was.

I've come to realize...if one can so easily turn back to what they were doing, could they perhaps have never truly repented?  True repentance would mean the old ways hold nothing for you...no matter HOW difficult things might get.

Michelle,

Food for thought:

Is there a difference in the Peter before Jesus died and rose again and the Peter after the resurrection? Was he transformed and Spirit filled before Jesus resurrection, keeping in mind that there is a difference between being Spirit filled as a new creation and having the Spirit of God come on the person like in the O.T.. The answer either way will not diminish the reality of our battle with the old flesh.

Also, note that Peter had a sword. What reasons would one possess a sword, keeping in mind it is not a hunting weapon? Was his action really wrong or just wrong for the moment since Jesus was supposed to be crucified? This then goes into are we allowed to defend ourselves or are we to simply submit to any and all evil perpetuated against us.

Hope this comes across as intended, to give you something to think about.
