i was crucified with Christ (?)

Romans 6:6 says "⁶knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin."

The context of this verse (as I have been taught)is that in Christ, our "inheritance" of a sin-nature from being "in Adam" was crucified with Christ on the cross.

So more than only having forgiveness of our sins by His Blood, this verse is saying that our "Adam-nature", the root of our sinful nature has been killed, so that we no longer need to be slaves to sin. Is this the way to understand this verse?

And if so, what is the importance of "knowing this"?

Is it that once we realize that we have already been crucified that we start to see why and how it can be that "sin will not rule over" us (Rom. 6:14)?

I've been a Christian for 40 years. There are many times I didn't walk with Him. As I've grown in Him, I've just seen I can walk away from sin but some of those are actually hard to walk away from to this day. But thru His grace, I'm still climbing.
