Is "be filled with the Holy Spirit" a continual thing that we must ask to have continually, or a one-time event?

Jenny,
There are a number of different views on this topic. All agree that we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit when we are born again. Here is a brief summary of two common views:
1) We are filled with the Holy Spirit at the time we are born again and remain filled throughout our life.
2) We are indwelt at new birth, but need to be filled. This filling is a second event that follows salvation. Within this view you will find two further breakdowns. A) Filled once and good to go. B) There is a need to continue to be being filled or refilled.
I realize this will not be a ton of help, but wanted to open the responses with the understanding that there are more than one view held on this topic by those who love Jesus.
Lord Bless,
LT
thank you both,
i guess i'll be patient and keep reading the word while i wait for more understanding on this
The Apostle Paul, stressing the importance of being filled with and led by the Holy Spirit, said this:
In Philippians 2:1-8, Paul tells us what it is like to live in "fellowship with the Spirit," likening it to having the same attitude as Jesus.
"Be filled with the Holy Spirit," says Paul in Ephesians 5:18.
Without the filling of the Holy Spirit, our faith is weak and wavering and we become caught up in the sinful ways of the world.
When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we have the mind and attitude of Jesus Christ, we develop a closer and deeper relationship with the Lord, and we live holy lives. The Holy Spirit puts God’s love in our hearts, God’s joy in our souls, and God’s peace in our minds. The Holy Spirit illuminates the Scriptures for us and gives us calmness in the face of adversity and uncertainty.
May we all be filled with the Holy Spirit.
thanks,
by the sounds if it, it seems like as we grow in Christ and surrender to His will, we are led (maybe filled?) with the Holy Spirit more and more
Hi Jenny,
You've received some excellent posts here so far.
Here's my take on the Holy Spirit:
Let's start with Ephesians 2:8, " For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God," (N.A.S.B.).
So, before we can claim John 3:16, we gotta have a little faith to realize what it means.......kinda like a little bit of water to prime the pump.....so we can partake of Jesus' living water that doesn't run dry.
I believe that measure of faith comes from the Holy Spirit (the primer), also as Jesus calls Him in John 16 - the Helper, the Advocate, and the Comforter...... which in Greek is Parakletos....which basically means "to come along side". John 16:8, " And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment;"...........it appears that the Holy Spirit does this convicting (or convincing) while "along side" a person. That's the amount of faith needed to receive God's grace......and the first step towards redemption.
Then, citing Acts 2:38, "Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit"........Granted.....there's at least one instance the Spirit fell on people before baptism in Acts 10.
Now, at this point, I believe the Holy Spirit enters into one's being and sets up His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19).
And......depending on how much we follow the in-dwelling Spirit...OR... hang on to our old baggage that we're having a problem crucifying(Galatians 5:24) will determine how "full of the Spirit" we are.
What we're saying here - He's the same Holy Spirit that came into our being, same fullness, same power,......but we tend to ignore, or at least experience an internal struggle. Galatians 5:17, " For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please."
This part of the salvation process is called Sanctification (1 Corinthians 1:30 ). Depending on how much we let Him, the Spirit will help us purge our impurities, and start to generate the Nine Fruit Of The Spirit as we supply fertile ground in our hearts.
So.......what do you guys think?
Grace and Peace.
This was helpful, thank you!
You cited 1 Corinthians 1:30, which states the Christ is my sanctification. What a blessing and relief this has been to begin to grasp (just starting to grasp this).
So to ask another question, is this fact the reason for the rest of the Christian life? The realization and faith that HE has become not only my legal justification, but also my sanctification along the path of sanctification?
Anything else you would like to share about this and the Holy Spirit is welcomed and appreciated.
Jenny, you are so welcome.
Jesus has become the in-dwelling Holy Spirit in our hearts....and is helping us to be holy, as God is holy.
I believe the Sanctification time lasts the rest of a believer's mortal life. Jesus nailed our sins to the cross when He went there in our place.......and we know that crucifixion involves a s-l-o-w, agonizing death.....sometimes taking the rest of the days of this life for our sins to be cast off.
But the good news is the Holy Spirit is helping us with this being realized. And at the same time He is assisting in fitting us with God's complete armor described in Ephesians Chapter 6 for our protection. Amen.
Our part is to follow His leading.
Grace and Peace.
