Can someone clarify something for me?

speaking of Jesus:

8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him...

this is the part that confuses me:

10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

What is the "order of Melchizedek"?

I have heard New Agers use this phrase and know what they speak of is a false Christ. So what is it really?

i'm confused because why was there a priest before Abraham? there was no temple... i just always got the impression that the story really gets started with Abraham, but apparently there was a whole priestly order happening before Abraham?
