I feel a little silly, now, because I forgot that this was April fool’s day.
Bridget,
Kevlar is a material that armor, such as bullet proof vests, are made of.
Hello Tammy
This is not a back-lash so no worries. When I accepted Jesus, I also was Baptized in the Holy Spirit. At that time I began to speak in tongues. That was some 36 yrs ago. I have never thought those who do not were any less then myself. I have heard over the yrs all kind of arguments on this subject. For myself I know no other way. I Pray in the Spirit all the time. I have been Blessed in that, before I spoke in tongues I never heard any teaching against it. And so after I began to speak in tongues, and heard "bad" things about it. I just Prayed for them, in the Spirit. I have never looked down on anyone who did not. For me though, I know no other way. Trust this made sense.
Lord Bless
lolol. @Joe. Don't feel silly. It wouldn't matter what day of the week it is, my reply would have been the same. It's part of my charm.
Hi Bridget, God bless you!
So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? (1 Corinthians 14:23)
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. (1 Corinthians 14:22)
Speaking in tongues is a sign to unbelievers, but when people make a big show or display of speaking in tongues (and I'm talking about something way out of order), I think it's simply wrong. I've seen it, haven't you? Remember 1 Corinthians 13. It's not very loving to unbelievers or new potential believers. Think about it, it might seem a little scary for new persons visiting a church. Making a big to do and being disruptive is what not to do. I think Paul was very clear on this. I don't like the showmanship that has crept into the church. Most of my speaking in tongues is in my private prayer life. I'd say 99% of the speaking in tongues I do is in private. A few verses for you to consider...
But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way. (1 Corinthians 14:40)
Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'" (John 7:38)
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:22)
Love,
Mary
LT, I think the kevlar's funny. LOL Such a hoot. :-)
Bridget,
Thanks for the question. I am very interested in hearing the comments of the different individuals. I don't see how it is possible to dismiss the gift completely. I'm not sure that all that goes on in the name of speaking in tongues today is really of the Holy Spirit but I certainly would never question Him. I am convinced that speaking in tongues is not the gift that we should covet as explained in 1 Corinthians 14:12. Here we are encouraged to seek those gifts that are beneficial to the church. Tongues do not seem to be that beneficial to the church in this passage. However, in the end, we are instructed to not forbid the speaking in tongues. It is a very interesting topic. I'm not convinced that praying in the spirit and speaking in tongues are synonymous terms.
I commented so I would be notified of new comments of others. I hope others give their view of this subject. Blessings - it is good to see that Joe is still around. haha
Hey Roy, Thanks, I’m glad someone thinks it’s good to still see me around,
Because I feel like I have been a thorn in someone’s flesh. Lol
Joe
PS haven’t heard much from you either lately. God Bless
Raul,
How do you explain this verse:
1 Co 14:2
2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. NIV
