All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Hi all. I'm new here and to the Christian faith. About a month ago, I thought my world was ending, failed marriage, lost hope and in total chaos. My addiction (porn) was about to get the better of me. Always in the back of my mind and body, I felt this pull against me. I had a very long talk with my best friend, who is a Penecostal, about Jesus. We talked for hours about faith and God, and how Jesus died for our sins. It didn't take a lot to convince me. I knew what that feeling was...I needed more out of life and myself to beat this addiction and keep my family.

I also went to church with my wife (who was raised Catholic, but has recently been going to a Christian church). What I felt there was amazing. That Monday after church, I contacted a small group director who met me and talked for a few more hours at a local coffee shop. I told him my story and he explained more about Jesus and the wonders of the faith.

I went home that night, and asked god for forgiveness.I prayed to God (psalm51) and begged for a change and faith in getting through this turmoil. The relief I felt afterwards was truly amazing. Within 2 weeks I took another Sunday off, went to church with my family, and asked to be baptized! It was truly amazing. I baptized my whole family. My wife, 16 year old daughter, 10 year old son, and 8 year old son.

My two boys have been baptized as Catholics at birth, but asked to be baptized as a Christian. My daughter has never been baptized either, so she wanted to be baptized, as well as my wife (once again, baptized and raised as a Catholic).

I was so caught up in the moment, I never stopped to think. I love the fact that my family wanted to share in my new faith, but did we do something wrong?

I've been reading the Bible, and did I do things backwards with them? Should they have asked for forgiveness BEFORE they were baptized? My oldest son has been through confirmation classes in his Catholic PSR class, my youngest is going through his confirmation class now, but we don't think we need to finish these classes, as we're raising them in the Christian faith. My wife's family are all Catholics.

My daughter has just moved in with me, and my new found faith is still hard for her to accept, but I don't think she has asked for forgiveness yet.

My wife is still trying to come to terms with my change, loves the new me, and finds joy and forgiveness with our past, but still seems a little uncomfortable with her lifestyle changes.

I love the feeling I have in Jesus, and love sharing what I am learning with my boys', but with my daughter and wife, its a little difficult.

I know this is a little confusing, but have I done something wrong? I had no faith before, and my wife is in her terms, not a practicing Catholic, but just an upbringing, wanted the kids baptized as a Catholic. But now...with me accepting Jesus unto my life and being baptized for Him, did I do things wrong with them?

Hey beloved your post just made me so joyful, I praise God for your salvation bro. You are in for a wonderful ride with the Lord. Your Spiritual food is the bible, so eat it up bro and ask God to help you understand it.

Ok let me ask you a question first. It is unlikely that a church would baptize anyone without them having repenting and believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior. So did the church happened to give you guys some classes about baptism before doing it where maybe your family had a chance to repent of their sins and believe in Christ?

Thanks for the praise my friend...I'm looking forward to a great journey. To answer a few more questions. No there were no classes before I or my family was baptized. I did tell the small group director that I went home, asked God for forgiveness, and was living in a whole new light. He was very excited for me, and I told him I was ready to get baptized, and off me and my family went.

After our baptism, we all met afterwards and had communion, and he welcomed us to the church. There was no real class or anything, I just felt very alive after I prayed for forgiveness, and was so proud to be baptized and look forward to a life in heaven with the Lord.

Does this mean me or my family is not forgiven? I personally talked to my advisor about what baptism means, and how it cleanses ones sins, but I was never asked, or asked myself, what I had to do to baptize my family, like I said, I was just caught up in the moment, and don't regret it one bit. I just want to make sure I am doing things right.

Should I discuss this with my pastor? I don't get a chance to attend church right now, as I work Sunday, but I am changing my work schedule to get my weekends off again so I can live in the light of the Lord on Sundays, and eat it up!!
Doug, it sounds to me like your adviser has correctly discerned that you have had an encounter with the living God. If you have truly asked God for forgiveness, and you are walking in new light, choosing to follow Jesus, then you are on the right track. God is gracious, and it is His Spirit leading you to this place in your life.

I would highly admonish you to do as David has said: get into the Bible and read read read. Pray as often as you can - learn to talk to God and learn to listen.

I highly recommend reading the Gospels first, then going into the book of Romans. Keep a journal of your prayers, with a date and details of your requests and concerns. Then also document what you are learning from the Bible. You will see that God is leading you and speaking to you through His word.
I think it would be a good thing to have this discussion with your family. Communication is vital to families, and the more they can share one with another, the stronger they will be. Just tell them what you are telling us, and pray together, seeking God counsel. Help the family understand what it means to be saved, and about being obedient to follow up with baptism. It seems they may have done this for you, and perhaps later on, they may have a greater revelation of who Christ is, and at truly find salvation on their own. At that time, they may want to be baptised again....for themselves this time...provided that is the case. But, regardless, do not think you have done anything wrong.. God completely understands your zeal....

blessings.........

i am replying to this in  realtion to the addiction mentioned. Namely, Porn, (or sex). I was wondering how common this is . I have found that quite a few of the guys at my church have fought this one. Maybe we all need to confess and help each other - particularly where someone back slides

Doug,

You have made a positive move in the right direction...for yourself and the raising of your family. The fact that your wife might not completely understand your change  isn't unusual and she will see that your change is real.

Some of the things you want to see and aren't, yet, are natural. Each person is on their own walk with the Lord. These changes take time for some of us. Give each member in your family time to grow in the Lord. You will see the changes and the awesomeness of them...later.

Blessings to you all as you grow in the Lord....

Rita
