All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Please share about how God has used music in your life to bring you to Christ and minister to you. What was your music pre-salvation and what is your music now that blesses you and brings you into the presence of God, that you praise Him with and that you are strengthened by to go into the battle each day that we believers fight? Share anything about what music means to you and the directions you have gone with it that has brought you to your current strength in Christ.

Hi again Jane, I am a massive Beatles fan but nothing compares to the old Christian hymns such as 'When I survey the wonderous cross' and 'It is well with my soul'.  The words really touch my soul and fill me with such awe at what Christ did for us because he loved us so much-

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

His dying crimson, like a robe, Spreads o’er His body on the tree; Then I am dead to all the globe, And all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

 Hi Allison,

Yes "massive" is the way I would explain it, too, lol. But anointed beats massive right lol?! I was so utterly blown away when I discovered anointed music for God such as the powerful words you share above. As fond as I am of the secular music that lead me to Christ, nothing is as supreme as anointed music from the Spirit of  God. When I first came to Christ and attended my first church the only two forms of music that were sanctioned were the old hymns  or country gospel. Well the old hymns felt like slow mo since I was used to explosive, rocking secular music and country was never my favorite so I was pretty perplexed until Glen Campbel turned to Christ and came out with some of the best country gospel ever. It was a big relief when I discovered there was something called Contemporary Christian music. Then it became the music of people like Amy Grant, Keith Green (to this day my favorite of all Christian singers- if I was marooned on a dessert Island and could only take one CD it would be Keith's), the 2nd Chapter of Acts and one after another followed. Interestingly though, although I like a large variety of Christian music, I have come full circle to appreciating the old hymns. I really like the modernized versions of some of them and I love the praise music of today.  Music is one of our greatest gifts from God and one of our greatest gifts back to Him to praise Him with.

I grew up on 70 and 80s rock. Tranisitioned to primarily Christian music, but listen to an acceptable (to me) blend.

For me currently the music of "Son's of Korah" is being used in a positive way. I have 5 of their CDs.

Lord Bless,

LT

Hi Nancy,

I know just what you mean about how the music can go out of our lives- I've experienced times like that too. Even now, there are days when I will be wrestling with something and I want to put it out of my mind because my spirit is craving music, but I can't. There are times when I stop and do praise God. At other times I want to listen to music and God is telling me no, to pray in the spirit. Because you know one could listen to music all the time to put off facing things. So, I'm noticing that I am becoming more sensitive to what these conflicting emotions mean.

I am like you, too, in that when I switched to Christian music I went cold turkey and had not a bit of desire for secular music. This lasted for years in my case. It is only now that the Lord has released me to see secular music differently and to reintroduce some back  into my life, so it came as quite a surprise as I never would of thought I would of gone in this direction. I have learned from this that this is a process of growth we go through with the Lord. He asks us at different times in our lives to give up what we love most, but then one day when our will is yielded to Him, He allows certain things back in again as we then see it from a new perspective. It's sort of like the way those of us who are parents train up our children to hold off on things until they are responsible.

I love the type secular songs you mentioned. One can't help but be touched by the beauty in some secular songs. The secular singers wouldn't have the gift if it wasn't for God. Its hard to imagine having such a special gift to sing yet not know God or thank him for it as is the case of so many popular singers who hit the skids. I sometimes pray for them as a group. And you are so right that God has given us a new song.

I listen to the Mississippi Mass Choir with the Late Frank Williams-He sings a beautiful son two beautiful songs that I listen to over and over again.  one is "We Shall Meet Again". , and Thank you Lord for my mansion I get so overjoyed. Then there is Shirley Casear he sings God got it all under control. Then the Late James Cleveland where is your faith in God..............Love them it has so much meaning. Mary Doris

As I said previously, it was a blessed day when I discovered Christian music. And then it got even better, because I found it came in many different genres. What a gift from God, a smorgasbord of different styles to enjoy and to praise Him with. I love it all, but when I discovered Black Gospel, I had to say no one, but no one, can sing a song and praise the Lord with as much feeling and celebration as this group of believers can both as a dynamic chorus  or individually. I've experienced all you mentioned except the late Frank Williams. I'll enjoy looking him up on YouTube. These are some of the greats. Shirley can get every last drip of soul out of a song :) I have many good memories of my music pre-salvation, but no music can touch gospel music. God has the best for His children. Amazing how it is unappreciated or hidden until one finds Him.

Romans 10:17 Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

Music never bring or give us  salvation.

Music cannot minister without the proper biblical christian lyrics or heavenly intent.

God blesses us not the music.

God draws us closer to Him.

God strengthened us not the music.

God gives us the right directions through His word not the music.

just IMHO... tnx

Char,

Glad you brought up praising God in dance. Some churches today would kick out that mad man, David, who loved God so much he had to let it all hang out in praise lol. Last night I was watching the Christian station and Donnie McCurkin was leading a large assembly in praise. Simultaneously, everyone in the whole place broke out in so much joy that they began to dance and leap for joy as they continued to praise God in song. It was truly inspiring as everyone, young and old, gave it all they had. The world can try to manufacture joy, but true joy only comes from God. God gave us our voices, our bodies and everything we've got to praise Him with. Heaven is going to be a joyous place where God is praised around his throne 24/7. Better then this, time will be suspended and our praise of Him will continually be in our mouths and in every fiber of our being. Heaven will be one amazing party! I tell people all the time when I witness, if you only knew how magnificent Heaven is you wouldn't want to waste one second accepting Jesus into your heart and preparing for the trip- they can see in my eyes and expression that it is a real place and they can go there too!!

I used to listen to Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Uriah Heap and Jethro Tull. We had this sub woofer built into an ottoman and the base went along the floor and shook the walls. Darkside of the Moon was more than a musical experience. It really shook the house. I'm surprised the neighbors didn't ask what we were doing. You guys digging a tunnel or what? We had these corner speakers and then these panel speakers. The panel speakers were kind of cool.

I love the hymns. Amazing Grace is a fave and Closer Walk With Thee. And Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. And I made up a tune for the Song of Moses. I figure it's important to know those words, book of Revelation and all. Great record. It's in Revelation 15...

They held harps given them by God and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb:  “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

Love and God bless,

Mary

http://www.allaboutgod.net/profiles/blogs/more-hardcore-worship contains pretty much everything that answers your question :)

Music is wonderful especially if it has a christian lyrics written and purposeth to worship and praise God not the secular songs intended for the secular world , selfish, sinful and lustful world which is being use by so called christians to set their mood for GOD or god? We can enjoy the rhythm, tempo, arrangement and the instruments of the music. It can set the mood ( from solemn hymnal up to heavy wild metal and from saddness to happiness depending on the heart conditions ). Admittance of sins, repentance of sins and acceptance  of Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Savior... that is the way to salvation... hearing the word of God not hearing any music...

Preaching the word of cannot be replaced in any way by playing a music or singing any song.

BIBLE is still the infallible and inerrant instrument.

Heart - feelings and emotions might deceived you... Let us be established and founded in the word of God... not in music, relationship, emotions, feelings, rewards, happenings and relative things... forgive me if i may offend many not my intention...

just IMHO... tnx

Music has always helped me open my heart to God, whether that's music written specifically to praise God or the hardcore that I love that I use to praise God. No one here is suggesting you replace the word with music, that's never been the intention.
