All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Who is the Holy Spirit?

What is His purpose?

How do we get Him?

How are we baptized by Him?

I would like us all to put our knowledge of the Holy Spirit together so that we can better understand Him.

He is an awesome part of our Christianity but do we really know Him?

Rita, Thank you so much for initiating this discussion.  I am gaining more understanding of Jesus in 'human form' and God. I was trying to get my head round different aspects regarding Jesus being God and man. Am trying not to quote too much in the forums :) but this article has also helped me understand a little better  just how like man God did indeed become: (http://www.gotquestions.org/Jesus-know.html) This part in particular : ''After the incident in the temple, we are told "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men" (Luke 2:52). If at this point in Jesus' experience He knew everything, it would not follow logically that He would need to "increase in wisdom." We know He had to grow physically (in stature), but we must also believe the scripture where our understanding fails us, that is, that He also put Himself voluntarily in a position where He needed to assimilate knowledge as a man. He needed to be truly man. He was always God, but He needed to become in all ways, except for sin, a man as well. In theological terms we refer to this as the hypostatic union. In order for Him to have a legitimate experience of temptation, He needed to limit certain facets of divine advantage.'' This last sentence, I think, lends itself nicely to what you are saying about when He said  his time hadn't come... so there were limits,  The rest of the article is really helpful too, This is a fascinating subject and I think I am just peeling off the top layer of thousands re. understanding and knowledge.

There is a diversity of beliefs concerning the Holy Spirit's role in our life’s as well as the timing of the baptism of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life.

AAG has many great discussions on file, but we are always happy to revisit these important topics.

I am very familiar with the different teachings out there about the topic and I believe the following after much study:

Every born again believer is baptize into the body of Christ by the Spirit at the time of the new birth. Every single believer can experience subsequent infillings of the Spirit, as seen all through the book of Acts.

 Ephesians 5:18 commands that we be filled with the Spirit;

What does that mean, to be filled with the Spirit?

1 Cor. 12:13 says, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit."

Speaking in tongues is not the only gift (sign) that shows that a person is baptize by the Spirit.

Every child of God is baptize and sealed by the Holy Spirit when we are born again.

Blessings

1) God the Holy Spirit, part of the Triune God.

2) To vast a subject to cover here or literally anywhere.

3) He indwells us at salvation, when we are born again.

4) Come to an end of self and surrender all to Jesus. It is the will of GOd that the Holy Spirit not only live in you, but live through you the life of Christ. This should happen at salvation, but often occurs much later and is seen as a second act of grace.

I can not afford to consider a Person of the Trinity *too vast a subject* or I might not be a Christian, or at least, not a very good one...so I have to keep studying this vast subject.

There is something besides salvation required to be able to preach, teach the Word of God. I call it Spirit Baptism...others call it anointing, but it is needed to minister unto others. A person who strives to teach without this anointing or Baptism, will teach carnally instead of spiritually.

Rita,

>>There is something besides salvation required to be able to preach, teach the Word of God

Show us with scripture how you come to that conclusion. Where does the bible say that there is something more needed to preach the gospel in an individual basis. We have all been commanded to make disciples. When the Church was getting started and Christ was on earth, the disciples had to wait for the Spirit to be send, though Jesus did impart to them the Spirit. What is the something besides salvation needed, you called it Spirit Baptism, please quote the verses that teach this understanding.

To function under the ministry gifts (Ephesians 4) we do need to be called to do such work. But  we are all called to preach the gospel and don't have to wait for anything to do that. What you are saying is not scriptural.

We are all baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ. 1 Cor. 12:13.

This forums and this method of communication is not the most conducive for studying these topics for the topic is extensive and not all the members or participants have a great deal of time to invest here detailing  and breaking down all the verses that would need to be looked at, to get a clear and right understanding of this or any other subject that is extensive. If you do have the time and find others that do as well, then that is great and a worthwhile effort, but I will encourage you and everyone here to use scripture to establish the point being made.

Every single born again Christian has the Spirit of God abiding in them. We are sealed by the Spirit and commanded to make disciples. One does not have to wait for anything else. Walking in holiness, separation from the world, does empower the believer to be an effective witness for the Lord.

>>A person who strives to teach without this anointing or Baptism, will teach carnally instead of spiritually.

Where is this found in scripture sister.

Rita,

Spirit baptism is but one work (purpose) of the Holy Spirit. You asked an open-ended question thta literally cannot be fully defined, for we know God, but not all about Hm and His works. We only know what He has revealed. Yes, we should strive to know Him more, but the question you asked, "What is His purpose" is like asking to read all the volumes regarding Jesus where John says "I suppose the whole world could not contain them all."

Actually we all have our bits of knowledge about the Holy Spirit that we can throw in and then we all may have a better understanding of Him.  I know that I know little but I desire to know more and understand better than what I do right now. I would say His purpose is to do the Will of God among His Children on this earth. He performs this marvelously well. I know that He works in me constantly. I see Him working with others as well.

The topic wasn't meant as a puzzler but it was meant to get the AAG members to share what they know of the Holy Spirit. It isn't meant as an argument as I promised Janet, but some arguments are trying to rear their heads. I don't know what others know. That's why I asked. I simply desire to learn more and thought I would ask the rest of the members for information that they may have about Him.

Blessings,

Rita

Rita,

It appears that you took my initial response negatively. I simply responded from my beliefs and that includes that the subject is so great and deep that it would require much discussion to cover it all. A. B. Simpson's book entitled "The Holy Spirit: is over 600 pages and it only touches some of the things realted to the Holy Spirit. It was not negative nor meant to squelch your discussion. I simply did not desire to take the time to elaborate at extensive length on that one deep question in the list you gave. Your response to your own question as listed in your last respnse to me is good, but it does not even scartch the surface of the work and purpose of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives, containing satan, working on unbelievers, healing, etc.

I realize that there is no way to answer the purpose of God, but...I guess what I am trying to do is strive to understand more about Him. I study the Members of the Trinity to be able to *see* Each more clearly than I have in the past. I didn't take you response negatively as I would count negativity. I was trying to learn more and was hoping that you all could help me to see more. I know that we all see things differently and I was hoping that through this topic I would be able to gain more. I truly mean you or anyone else no disrespect in this study.

I have a very deep need to understand God more than I did yesterday and less than I will tomorrow.

As always, I appreciate your responses and I appreciate you taking time to answer me. If I need additional answers, that isn't your fault, only that I need to ask.

Blessings to you and yours...

Rita

All is good. Might I add that a great way to know God better through study of God is to examine His attributes.

I also appreciate your desire to know Him more, as I too am on that same quest.

Blessings Sister,

LT

Rita,

I would like to add that when we are discussing the Holy Spirit we are discussing God Himself. How do we define God's purpose for existence and His purpose in operation?

Lord Bless,

LT

Another little bit of food for thought...no Person of the Trinity operates out side the power of the other members of the Trinity. They are in agreement all of the time in everything.

Therefore, Jesus couldn't do anything without the power of the Father and the Holy Spirit. Nor can the Father or the Holy Spirit operate without Christ.
