New International Version (NIV)
44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[a] Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life.
I have a question back to you... what does it mean: "...that Jesus is the only way to Heaven?"
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Excellent answers, my brothers.
Next question, please.
Grace and Peace.
Chris, on the contrary - I ask questions like that to my children and to the Bible students I teach. The way that I understand it, Terry is provoking discussion and thought.
It's one thing to parrot a doctrinal statement that you learned by rote. It's an entirely different thing to consider it from a point of arguing for it, against doubts and disbeliefs. Most of us in the culture today face this very question from our co-workers, neighbors and friends. If we shirk away from it, or if we just respond with a pat answer, then the person who asks will know that we don't truly know the answer because we have never really wrestled with the question.
The question I have asked is also pertinent: "what does it mean that 'jesus is the only way' to heaven"? While we acknowledge the statement as truth, it's insufficient if we don't actually understand it. No one has answered that yet, and I think that bears consideration.

It is said that you don't really believe something until you can make an argument for the opposing view well enough that you have to re-evaluate your own position at least once.
OldPilot, I'm not dancing around it. If you read back to my first answer, I started off by declaring that this is my conviction and then challenging "what does it mean?"
I have also simply challenged Chris' statement that Terry is not saved, since he asked this question.
Scribe D'Nucov, I didn't mean "dancing around" the way that you took it if I offended you I apologize. What I meant is that the subject is very provocative & many people will avoid the subject.
The plan truth is without Jesus a person is not saved, a person simply cannot get around that fact. People cannot hide behind the notion that we never heard about Jesus, even Mohammad heard about Jesus & rejected him.
Again, sorry if I offended you just a poorly written opening to your post.
God Bless.
Bev, I think we have to be prepared to explain this to people. Most people tend to be offended by trite answers to something so confounding to them.
So, let's try it this way:
* How is Jesus the Only Way?
* Why is Jesus the Only Way?
* Who says Jesus is the Only Way?
* In what way is Jesus the Only Way?
* In what way is Jesus the Only Way?
* Can we know objectively that Jesus is the Only Way?
* Does the Bible make the full case for this, or is that just one statement Jesus made?
* What do I have to do, to experience going the Only Way?
We have to be able to deconstruct the concept into simple language, if we're ever going to actually evangelize people to follow Him.
Some people will hear you say that Jesus is the only way and then go follow some cult or religious system that obfuscates the clear and plain teachings of Jesus. I think we have to be able to make a rational clear and plain claim for this statement, without just stamping our feet like children and saying "BECAUSE!!".
Most of the people I encounter in the world will argue against Jesus being "the only way" for the very reason that they haven't heard a Christian clearly and cogently explain the How and Why.
There is an answer.
And by the way, I sat with an American Missionary who taught this to a young woman in India in such simple terms, with such authority, that it totally blew me away. In less than an hour, he led a confused modern young Hindu woman who was considering converting to Islam, but she also wasn't sure if she may be an atheist.
He led her to Christ by demonstrating that Jesus is the Only Way, and that God has made this clear to all of us. When he was done, she agreed that it was now clear to her as well.
