A Punishing God?
Hi,
In the Old Testament, God is always punishing those who sin, but in the New Testament the atmosphere is more loving and forgiving.
My teacher said that she doesn't believe God to be a punishing God, and then our consequences are not that of God, but of ourselves.
Firstly, in saying that God is not a punishing God, does that mean we are doubting God's Word?
Secondly, in believing that we cause our own problems, is that undermining God's power?

In New testament God is also punishing those who is walking on wrong way. Because He loves you.
" And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son , despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth , and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth .If ye endure chastening { it is for chastening that ye endure }God dealeth with you as with sons: for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers , then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us , and we gave them reverence :shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits and live?. For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure [as seemed good to them ], but he for our profit , that we might be partakers of his holiness.Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous , but grievous :nevertheless afterwards it yeildeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are excercised thereby.Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down , and feeble [palsied] knees; And make straight Paths for your feet , lest that which is lame be turned out of the way :but let it rather be healed." Hebrews 12:5--13.

Sin requires punishment, whether in the O.T. or the N.T.. In the O.T. there was only a partial covering for sin and God was more visible in actions, or at least visible because it was recorded for man to see and understand. God requires payment for sin in the N.T. as well. This is why Jesus came and died on the cross. He brings a full and complete covering for sin. Thos who accept Him do not stand condemned by their sin any longer (Rom. 8:1). Those who reject Him still stand under the penalty for their sin. We now live under grace and God is patient. His goal is the salvation of men and women, not their destruction (2 pe. 3:9-10).
Keep in mind that God does not indiscreminetly punish people. Sin requires punishment (Rom. 6:23) and all have sinned (Rom. 3;23). A person is not sent to hell for any other reason than personl guilt, meaning personal sin. Christ offers forgiveness, but He must be accepted and in doing so the penalty is paid and the person freed and forgiven.
Lastly, if anyoine only wants to point to God as being a God of only love (which is only 1 of 16 attributes listed in Scripture) they need only read the Book of Revelation. God's wrath will be poured out and the day is growing closer. That is why we admonish people to accept Him while it is still called today, for today is the day of salvation.

God is awesome as well as consuming fire.Awesome in love,in mercy and in forgiveneess etc.We have choices on how we respond to God.We suffer the consequences of our actions.The story of the Prodigal son in Luke demonstrates Gods love in forgiveness and the consequences of the action of the prodigal son.Please read the account in Luke,meditate on it and get back to me.May the Lord bless you real good.

our fathers in earth ......dey correct us wen we do something wrong .....they punish us so we wont do it again .......if our earthly fathers care so much .......much more our heavenly father ........? THINK ....sometimes we do cause our own problems ....but 4 eg say if some one took away a very important file or yours even dor you kept it safe.... and yo boss gets really mad at you .....and fires you ....clearly its not your fault but you lost yo job think of the problems you would face with out money /? THINK .... that would be GOD coz hez gona giv you something better ........and you get a better job wit 10 times more salary .....wow THINK........when GOD closes one door he opens another ......4 a better life ...our earthly father would love to see us grow up and reach our goals and become some one great much more our heavenly dad THINK.........so therefore GOD is not a punishing GOD he punishes us becoz he loves us ...az explained above ...so he is a loving god ,father .................secondly problems most of them are not caused by us//:) if we cause our problems ....then we'll have a hard time......
