Decoding the Old Testament and Finding Jesus

Introduction:

I used to be like you. A skeptic, a halfway believer, “it’s complicated” response I would give, ready to drag my feet at the mention of religion or Jesus or anything of the sort. If someone knocked on the door with a pamphlet, I would quickly get out of the conversation. I would not call myself a “closed book” just someone who never really got what all the fuss was about. There was a point in my life when I got mildly curious. I remember one day, trying on my own, to open a Bible and it randomly began on a page talking about hell! I slammed the book down so fast….I was horrified. That little episode set me back by a whole six months. What I’m trying to say is that you need a guide. At least I had my father to ask dumb questions and he patiently would answer them one at a time. “What is salvation, really?”, I would say. I went through a lot that 1st year of becoming a Christian, including demonic attacks, but we will save that for another time. Just know those buggers are real.

My hope is that this document will serve as a guide to you in your personal journey with God. One thing I have found is that ultimately, it’s about a walk with God. So, my prayer for you right now is that this writing blesses you to walk closer with God than you did before reading it. You can have a close relationship with God. He can and does hear your prayers. And he deeply cares for you. And if you seek Him with all your heart, you will find Him. That’s an important concept to really get. I pray that in your walk with God, you will come to see this more and more.

Here is the gift the I want to give you. I want to help you decode the Old Testament and find Jesus in a way that you have never been told before. It will strengthen your faith. The light bulbs will go off! And you will see him in a new light! Now, you can read the New Testament any time you like to read about the life of Jesus. But I want to show you Jesus in a way that will lift the lead off your eyes as they say, … I want to show you Jesus through the eyes of God Himself. That is a tall order, so stay with me on this one.

Now you might say, “How do you propose to do that?”. I am going to use “The WORD”, plain and simple. It will speak for itself. I will give you small explanations to guide you, but the Word is enough to show you the way. We have several topics to cover but my goal is to decode the Old Testament and show you Jesus in new and exciting ways. Before we get underway, I want you to note that the Old Testament prophecies and verses included in this guide were written 500-2,000 years before Jesus was ever even born!!! The Bible itself was written by 40 authors, some were kings, others were farmers, that didn’t know each other from different parts of the world and different generations. Yet you can see the hand of God and the cohesiveness that brings this message together. Also note that I used bold print in a number of verses for emphasis. The emphasis is mine and not from the Bible. Ok, let us get started!

Some Fundamentals

There are a few key passages that I want to show you initially that clearly point to Jesus in the Old Testament. This will be the fundamentals or basics of your understanding. First let’s start with the birth of Jesus. This passage from Micah 5:2 clearly shows that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem:

Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.”

With God, nothing happens by mistake. In Hebrew Bet or Beth means house or is a symbol for house. And Bet + Lechem = House of Bread. Jesus Himself is called the “bread of Life” born in the House of Bread. “And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:35You can take this further and say that Jesus is the Word (see John 1:1-18, John 6:51) and that by reading the Word, you are eating the bread of life. With God, there are layers upon layers of complexity and beauty with which He tells His story.

Let’s look at another verse in Isaiah which talks about the coming Child:

And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Note: That in verse 7 it says this will come from the throne of David. Keep this in mind. In a later chapter, we will study the Seed, Root, and Branch of the Lord and it will point back to the house of David.

Now let’s look at the suffering and death of the Messiah in Psalm 22. Keep in mind this prophecy was written by David 500 years before Roman Crucifixion even existed! (And of course, long before Jesus was ever born.) Yet, he describes what Jesus went through to such an exact degree! See also the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You will read how Jesus fulfilled Psalm 22.

Nor has He hidden His face from Him;
But when He cried to Him, He heard.

I will pay My vows before those who fear Him.
26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
Let your heart live forever!
27 All the ends of the world
Shall remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the families of the nations

28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s,
And He rules over the nations.
29 All the prosperous of the earth
Shall eat and worship;
All those who go down to the dust
Shall bow before Him,
Even he who cannot keep himself alive.
30 A posterity shall serve Him.
It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,
31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born,
That He has done this.

Psalm 22 is such a key to the whole Bible. I want you to just allow the Word to speak to you. The 1st time I read it, I didn’t get it. But the 2nd time I read it I cried. I felt the pain He went through as well as the victory for generations. Read it one more time. What does Psalm 22 say about how He was seen by most people? Did they recognize Him as the Messiah? No! In fact, it says:

“But I am a worm, and no man;
A reproach of men, and despised by the people.
7 All those who see Me ridicule Me;
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 “He trusted[b] in the Lord, let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”

No, the Messiah came and was ridiculed and rejected. In fact, He was the Chief Cornerstone that was rejected as it states in Psalm 118:21-22

Let’s take a look at another verse, where you can see Jesus as the Cornerstone of Zion:

A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.

And righteousness the plummet; [This is an image of the cross!!!]
The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
And the waters will overflow the hiding place.
18 Your covenant with death will be annulled,
And your agreement with Sheol will not stand;
When the overflowing scourge passes through,
Then you will be trampled down by it.

Are you beginning to see Jesus in the Old Testament? Do you see him as a stone – a foundation of the church – laid as the Chief Cornerstone? Let’s take a look at the Arm and Hand of the Lord.

The Arm & Hand of the Lord

Take a moment to think about your own body. Is your arm not an extension of the rest of you? It executes your will, does it not? If your mind tells your arm to do something, it’s still a part of you, correct? Be patient now because I’m going to share many verses with you and then connect several dots. Read through these verses and let the Word speak to you. Take your time.

9 Awake, awake, put on strength,
O arm of the Lord!
Awake as in the ancient days,
In the generations of old.
Are You not the arm that cut Rahab apart,
And wounded the serpent?
10 Are You not the One who dried up the sea,
The waters of the great deep;
That made the depths of the sea a road
For the redeemed to cross over?
11 So the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness;
Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
12 “I, even I, am He who comforts you.
Who are you that you should be afraid
Of a man who will die,
And of the son of a man who will be made like grass?
13 And you forget the Lord your Maker,
Who stretched out the heavens
And laid the foundations of the earth;
You have feared continually every day

And where is the fury of the oppressor?

See how the Arm and Hand of the Lord throughout history is the Lord Your God! Stay with me for the Arm of the Lord is about to be revealed!

And all the ends of the earth shall see
The salvation of our God.”

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,

And made intercession for the transgressors.

Ok now I want you to compare Psalm 22 with Isaiah 53. What do you notice? Isn’t the Arm of the Lord and the Suffering Messiah one and the same? Did we despise Him? Did he bare our iniquities? Why would God do this with His Own Arm? The answer is revealed further in Isaiah 59

ISAIAH 59:15-17
The Redeemer of Zion
Then the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him
That there was no justice.
16 He saw that there was no man,
And wondered that there was no intercessor;
Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him;
And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.
17 For He put on righteousness as a breastplate,
And a helmet of salvation on His head;
He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing,
And was clad with zeal as a cloak.

A little further up in Isaiah 59, God gives us the answer as to why we needed Jesus. We needed a propitiation for our sins and we needed an Intercessor! Because before Jesus we were separated from God:

That it cannot save;
Nor His ear heavy,
That it cannot hear.
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear.

But this displeased the Lord. He didn’t think this was just to mankind. I’m sure you’ve heard John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Now you understand why!!! He gave us His only Son, and His own Arm bought Him the victory (see Psalm 98:1). So that Jesus could bare our sins and sit at the right hand of the Father and make intercession for us.

The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

Romans 8:34
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Let’s look at several more verses that show the Arm and Hand of the Lord. Now side by side. I want you to see just how important it is to remember the works of the Hand and the Arm of the Lord, especially for the children of Israel! I want you to see how the Arm of the Lord has gain Him the Victory! (Psalm 98:1). You will see over and over again that it is the strength of the Lord’s arm / hand that saves and redeems. And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Once you know that Jesus is the arm and hand of the Lord, reading these verses gives them new context and revelation! Notice how often righteousness and salvation are also mentioned.

Deuteronomy 5 15 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

Deuteronomy 26 8 So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders.

Deuteronomy 32 39 ‘Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.

Jeremiah 18 6 “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?” says the Lord. “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel!
Ezekiel 20 5 “Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On the day when I chose Israel and raised My hand in an oath to the descendants of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, I raised My hand in an oath to them, saying, ‘I am the Lord your God.’
Habakkuk 3 4 His brightness was like the light; He has rays flashing from His hand, And there His power was hidden.

Seed, Root, Branch
Let’s start with the lineage of Jesus. If you read Matthew 1:1-16 it shows Jesus’ lineage as the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.

2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4 Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 5 Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6 and Jesse begot David the king.
David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife[a] of Uriah. 7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa.[b] 8 Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah. 9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon,[c] and Amon begot Josiah. 11 Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon.
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 14 Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. 15 Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

What’s so fascinating about this is Matthew’s list contains 42 generations in 3 groups of 14 each,
covering 2,000 years. The 3rd group, however, names only 13 generations, the 14th evidently being intended for Mary. Matthew shows Jesus’ legal right to the Davidic throne through
line of Solomon.

We are going to explore the Old Testament which points to references of the Seed, Root, and Branch and decodess how these relate to Jesus. Let’s start at the very beginning. The first-time God mentions a Seed is in Genesis 3.

Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

This is the moment in which God was condemning Satan and declaring victory would be born through a coming Messiah. In other words, Satan would deal a glancing blow to the Messiah but the Messiah would deal a much greater crushing blow to Satan’s head. Even then, when God was kicking Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, He was giving them a victory over sin. Even then He took pity upon them and the wickedness that had been done to them. So God declares a coming Seed that will have a victory. The next time God mentions a “Seed” is when speaking to Abraham.

Let’s have a closer look at a couple key verses regarding Abraham’s Seed:

Genesis 22 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Genesis 26 4 And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

Let’s put Genesis 22 in context. This is where Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his one and only Son. Three times he was asked and three times he obeyed. He took his son to Mt Moriah. The very same place where Jesus was later crucified!It is said to this day “In the Mount of the Lord, it shall be provided.” God blessed his seed because he had obeyed His voice. Jesus was later born out of this lineage or seed.

Next let’s look at David’s Seed:

3 “I have made a covenant with My chosen,
I have sworn to My servant David:
4 ‘Your seed I will establish forever,
And build up your throne to all generations.’”

Now let’s re-read Psalm 89:20-21

20 I have found My servant David;
With My holy oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom My hand shall be established;
Also My arm shall strengthen him.

Do you see it? Now understanding that Jesus came through David’s seed? That this is not just stated in the New Testament but it is verified in the Old Testament as well! It is especially clear when you know that Jesus is the Hand and Arm of the Lord! Read the whole Psalm for more context. It is really beautiful. Here is a little more of Psalm 89 proving Jesus was coming from David as God’s firstborn.

22 The enemy shall not outwit him,
Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23 I will beat down his foes before his face,
And plague those who hate him.
24 “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
And in My name his horn shall be exalted.
25 Also I will set his hand over the sea,
And his right hand over the rivers.
26 He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father,
My God, and the rock of my salvation.’
27 Also I will make him My firstborn,
The highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My mercy I will keep for him forever,
And My covenant shall stand firm with him.
29 His seed also I will make to endure forever,
And his throne as the days of heaven.

Ok need further proof of the lineage of Jesus as the coming Messiah? Let us have a look at Isaiah 11. Note that Jesse is David’s Father.

And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,

……… it continues on to verse 10 to say:

10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,
Who shall stand as a banner to the people;
For the Gentiles shall seek Him,
And His resting place shall be glorious.”

This another verse that clearly points to God’s love for the nations to receive His Salvation!

A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
6 In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;

THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Only GOD is considered infinitely HOLY and HIS perfection makes HIM the ONE and ONLY fully RIGHTEOUS entity in the known and unknown universe. The real question is, “How can a HOLY GOD impute His righteousness onto a sinful human race? The answer is found in JESUS and His Name through whom alone can cleanses our sin and give us or make us whole through His [imputed or placed on us] Righteousness.

8 ‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest,
You and your companions who sit before you,
For they are a wondrous sign;
For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH.
9 For behold, the stone
That I have laid before Joshua:

Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’
Says the Lord of hosts,
‘And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
10 In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts,
‘Everyone will invite his neighbor

*See how the number 7 is used in the Revelation of Christ when He judges the Earth?

Joshua is a type of JESUS in the Old Testament or the Hebrew Bible. Joshua chapter 5, we see him standing in front of a unknown Warrior who is even revealed as a Theophanies or God in the flesh! When Joshua questions HIM [the Captain of the LORD of Hosts], please note His response. Joshua, “take off your sandals for the place you are standing is HOLY Ground”. Joshua worshiped there before HIM. When you read the Exodus of Israel, Moses went through the exact same experience on Mt Sinia when the LORD GAVE THE LAW OR TORAH! Here we see Joshua being commissioned to take the Land of Cannan as the successor to Moses!

Salvation Decoded

Now before we go much further you must know something beautiful about the name of Jesus and every time you see the word “Salvation”. I want everyone to know that the Name JESUS in English and YESHUA in Hebrew is a shortened version in Mosaic language that means, Yahweh is [my] SAVIOR! [idea: He is GOD & SAVIOR]. Here is a greater explanation. Just know Jesus’ name is about the salvation of God (See Matt 1:21). Here is a deeper explanation:

The name "Jesus" in English has a complicated linguistic history that isn't apparent in modern Bibles.
"Jesus" is an Anglicized form of the Greek name Yesous found in the New Testament. Yesous represents the Hebrew Bible name Yeshua, which occurs as "Jeshua" in English Bibles (Ezra 2:2; Neh 7:7). In Medieval English the "J" was pronounced as a "Y" is now.

"Yehoshua"
Yeshua, in turn, is a shortened form of the name Yehoshua ("Joshua" in English Bibles).
Moses' righthand man, Joshua, has three names in the Bible. Originally, it was Hoshea, but Moses changed it to Yehoshua (Num 13:16). During the Babylonian Exile, it was shorted to Yeshua (Neh 8:17).

"Yehoshua" is a compound name consisting of two elements.
(1) The prefix "Yeho–" is an abbreviation of the Tetragram Maton, God's Four-Letter Name: Yod-He-Vav-He: YHVH. (Modern scholars think the third letter was pronounced as "W." Thus: YHWH, Yahweh.)

The 4-Letter Name
In the Hebrew Bible "Yeho-" is used at the beginning of certain proper names: Jehoshaphat, Jehoiachin, Jehonathan (the "J" was pronounced as "Y" in Medieval English).
The Tetragram Maton has a suffix form that occurs in some names, "-yah." In the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) this ending is spelled "-iah" in Greek and appears in English Bibles in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah, and Zechariah. "Elijah" is actually Eli-Yah, my God is YHVH.
(2) The second element of the name Yehoshua is a form of the Hebrew verb yasha which means to deliver, save, or rescue.
Thus, linguistically, the name "Yehoshua—Yeshua—Jesus" conveys the idea that God (YHVH) delivers or saves, eventually through his servant Messiah, who bears God's name.

The Hebrew Bible word "savior" is also rooted to yasha.
Moshiah is used 9x for God (2 Sam 22:3; Isa 43:3; 45:15, 21; 49:26; 60:16; 63:8; Jer 14:8; Hos 13:4), and 5x for human "deliverers," "rescuers" or "saviors" (Judg 3:9, 15; 2 Kgs 13:5; Obad 1:21; Neh 9:27).

Isaiah 19:20 may refer to the Savior-Messiah: "He [God] will send [to the Egyptians] a Moshiah and a Rav [champion] and he will deliver [natzal] them."

God Gives His Name to People
After the "Aaronic Blessing" is pronounced over the people of Israel (Numbers 6:24-26), God tells Aaron and his sons: "So they shall put [sim] my Name on the children of Israel" (v. 27). This act becomes a key identity marker in the future.
In the book of Jeremiah, God gives his name both to the future son of David (the Messiah) and to Jerusalem. King and people are owned by, belong to, share the divine Name of their God.
I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch [or Son]...
This is the name by which he will be called:
YHVH Tzidkeinu ["the LORD our righteousness"].
(Jer 23:5, 6)
In those days Judah shall be saved,
And Jerusalem shall dwell in safety;
and this is the Name by which she will be called:
YHVH Tzidkeinu. (Jer 33:16)
Accordingly, in Matthew 1:21 "Yeshua" is the name God gave his Son. It is his original birth-name.
"She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Yesous [Greek; Yeshua in Hebrew], for it is he who will save his people from their sins."
Then note the play on words on the name "Yeshua" and the noun "yeshuah" that Hebrew speakers would hear in Acts 4:
"There is salvation [Heb. yeshuah] in no one else; for there is no other Name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved [Heb. yasha]" (v. 12).

Now you see it! Once you know that Jesus is the arm of the Lord and His name is about the Salvation of God, it’s clear as day. Jesus will be known to His people. He will be known to all of Israel as their hope and redeemer. So I say to Zion, your God reigns! Also see Romans chapter 11- All of Israel will be saved

Isaiah 61 New King James Version (NKJV)
The Good News of Salvation
61 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,

This is literally God our Salvation. Now you know that Salvation = Jesus, you know the “Me” being discussed here is the salvation of God, Jesus Himself. Here it is again:

“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Surely your salvation is coming;
Behold, His reward is with Him,
And His work before Him.’”

Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,

This of course is a prophecy that Jesus fulfilled. (Matt 21:5) There are soooo many verse concerning Salvation. SO I have included a separate research excel document with tons of verses on each subject. Just open the excel document for more verses on Salvation. But Here are two more that I think are critically important. One comes from Isaiah 26 The Song of Salvation. While it doesn’t have the word salvation in this verse it’s clear what it’s saying:

Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust;
For your dew is like the dew of herbs,
And the earth shall cast out the dead.

Now that’s salvation!

13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people,
For salvation with Your Anointed.
You struck the head from the house of the wicked,
By laying bare from foundation to neck.

In this context, we see again the devil’s defeat as part of our salvation! Praise God! Compare this verse to Genesis 3:5. You see the Anointed and the Seed are one and the same hat bring forth salvation to the people! In the book of 1 John, Christ taught us that the Devil, the great Serpent was a liar and a murdered from the very beginning. He lied to Eve and inspired not only the fall of mankind but the very first murder through Cain that slew his brother Abel.

Gentiles
Is God just for Israel? No of course not! God is for Gentiles also. You see, it was “too small a thing” for God to be only for Israel. In just a moment I’ll prove to you that Jesus is “The Holy One of Israel” In the Old Testament. But first, I want to show you how He is the Servant, the Light to the Gentiles.

49 “Listen, O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
The Lord has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.

And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”
3 “And He said to me,
‘You are My servant, O Israel,
In whom I will be glorified.’

And my work with my God.’”

Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,

“Wait a minute – Israel’s Redeemer was given to the Gentiles in the Old Testament?” Yes, indeed.
Holy One of Israel
The phrase “The Holy One of Israel” referring to God Himself, is throughout the Old Testament. What I seek to prove to you is that when it references “The Holy One of Israel” that it’s really referring to Jesus. This is critically important. Many people believe in God but have yet to believe in Jesus as God. I seek to show you that He is the Holy One of Israel, who has come and will come again. Let’s take another look at Isaiah 49:7.
ISAIAH 49:7
7 Thus says the Lord,
The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One,
To Him whom man despises,
To Him whom the nation abhors,
To the Servant of rulers:
“Kings shall see and arise,
Princes also shall worship,
Because of the Lord who is faithful,
The Holy One of Israel;
And He has chosen You.”

It is obvious that the Jesus Himself was despised and abhorred by the nations. There is a quote here of the Lord Himself speaking to Himself in Isaiah 49:7. It’s a powerful glimpse into an inside conversation. God the Almighty Father has chosen His Son. “He has chosen You”. The hand executes the will of the Father and redeems. He works, who will reverse it? Let us look at Isaiah 43, where I think this is even clearer. Do you see Him?

The Creator of Israel, your King.”

Notice how many times The Holy One of Israel and the word Redeemer go together!

Other interesting images of Jesus in the Bible

Joseph in Egypt – the picture of Joseph as a rejected suffering servant and then after a period of time, an exalted ruler – who forgave and restored, his 12 brothers, who originally hated and rejected Joseph even to the point of faking his death that broke the heart of Jacob, their father. So will be at the Second Coming of Christ toward the nation of Israel. See Romans 11. GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN THE JEWS!
Genesis 22: Abraham – taking his one and only son to sacrifice his one and only son. Yachid, absolute One and Only son. Pictures the father and son as God the Father and His Son.

Numbers Serpents – 21/22 – As he, Moses, had Joshua raise the bronze serpent on a pole – the people who looked upon it were healed of the poison through the snake bites [ was a symbol of sin that brings about spiritual death and disobedience encouraged by the Devil].

The Lamb’s blood on the lintel and the door posts at the direction of Moses to save the firstborn of every family of Israel while in Egypt at the first Passover as the death-Angel Passed-over each family dwelling while in the first exile of the Hebrews. They were spared death because of the blood atonement directed by GOD through Moses, he obeyed Adonai in every detail.

These are only a few of the types of Messiah hidden in the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible. We have so much to be grateful for toward the Jews. More on that later.

The Roman Road

While the majority of these writing focus on decoding the Old Testament, I’d be remiss if I didn’t take you down the “Roman Road”. It is a series of verses in the New Testament that clearly explain Salvation and Christ as the Righteousness of God. Let’s start with Romans 3:21-25:

So basically, we all need a Savior. We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Simply put no one is perfect or righteous enough. We need an atonement for our sins from the one who never knew any sin. Christ was sinless and the perfect sin offering. In fact, He was an over payment for our sins!

Faith Triumphs in Trouble
5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have[a] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
“So you’re saying I just have to believe and trust in God?” Yep! God made it really simple for us. I think for a few reasons but one is that there could be no mistaking that no one can save themselves. It’s only through Christ, that way the Father is glorified through the Son.

Let us repeat that. For whoever calls on the name of the Lord SHALL BE SAVED. (emphasis my own) It means literally anyone – rich, poor, young, old, dying, blind, deaf, of any race, religion, gay, straight, male, female, of any orientation, type or creed. Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. God is for you. Now, remember when I said that if you seek God with all your heart you’ll find Him?

Deut. 4:29

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Final Prayer

This entire writing is to help advance the kingdom of heaven for the glory of God. If you haven’t given your life whole-heartedly to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, now is the time to make that declaration. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Rom 10:10

So let’s make that declaration right now…. with this simple prayer:

“Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God, the Arm of the Lord and the very hand of God who created the heavens and the earth. I believe you died for my sins so that I could be saved. Jesus, I make you the Lord of my life. I give my life to you now and forever as your servant. Jesus become my Savior. Your Word promises me that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Well…. Save me too! I will continue to seek you with my whole heart because your Word promises that I will find you. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for becoming my Savior. Amen.”
