Your Love Is Like A River

His love is like a River.

So, how do we keep it ever before us, the desire to imitate our loving God?

We have summarized Paul’s teaching thus:

1-Love as Christ loved …… Ephesians 5.1-2

2-Treat others well …… Ephesians 4.32

3-Speak well ……. Ephesians 4.29

4-Get rid of evil behavior ……. Ephesians 4.31

5-Seek God’s purity ……. Ephesians 5.3-5

6-Be grateful, not greedy …… Ephesians 5.5

How to stay connected to the great love that fuels such behavior from us?  Look to him, look for him, stay connected to God.  Just this morning I was reading a sermon of Charles Spurgeon, the old 19^th century English preacher; the title was ‘Songs in the Night.’  Spurgeon talks about the power of song, especially in the evening, when night can grow long with worry or pain or anxiety.  “He who singeth a song to Christ in the night singeth the best song in all the world; for he singeth from the heart.” 

Indeed songs of faith help to keep me grafted into God’s heart.  In the past week, I have talked to a couple folk who are really hurting—anxiety that is unbearable, as she described herself on the brink of hell, and another whose heart has been broken by a loved one, to the point where her insides have been turned upside down.  How powerful the song when our psyche is tormented!  Spurgeon advised, “Keep your mouth full of songs, and you will often keep your heart full of praises; keep on singing as long as you can; you will find a good method of driving away your fears.”

 We need an ever-fresh river of the Spirit flowing through us . . . a love that you and I must seek out, as he will never force his way in, or assert his will over us.  No, his love is like a river.
