(Another post from the past! In our Jesus Discovery Group, we are currently discussing "Grace and Truth" [John 1:14-18]. "[Jesus] came from the Father, full of grace and truth." The OT equivalent is "Mercy and Truth", so I thought I'd share these blog posts which I posted in August 07.)
Do you have to do that too, so you can remember? I know for me, if I write something down, it is SO much easier to remember.
Well, before I go on to the study of our two words, mercy and truth, I just want to share this point. In our proverb, this dad was giving his boy this very good advice. And we can take it too...
Not only "tie" mercy and truth around your neck, but also
write them down, so you remember! And more importantly, make them permanent.
Engrave them on stone
tablets in your heart.
"Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,
And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man." (3:3-4, NKJ)
It's just like how you would make your impression in wet concrete. Don't know if you did that when you as kid, much to your dad's disgust. Intentional or not, when you put it there and the concrete dries, it permanent.
Or when you were young and in love, you'd carve it on the school desk, on on the big oak tree in the school yard. There for all to see!!
So, in other words, he is saying to
let mercy and truth make a permanent impression on our hearts. If we do, we will never be the same!
And tomorrow, more about mercy!! Stay tuned!
