“So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13.4-5
Good Day!
A new schoolyear is underway, and there is a sense of anticipation in the air, I do believe! We had our kickoff beach bonfire for Fellowship of Christian Athletes a couple days ago … how great it was to see the smiling, tanned-face students come over the bluff, ready to be with friends who share Jesus in common.
Just the day before, I had discussions with three seniors about the leadership of the club this year—what it should look like, and who should be the president. But the president had already distinguished himself … see, he was the one who in the last number of months had found no job too unpleasant, even when it meant getting up at 6 am on a weekend morning to go reserve a firepit so the rest of us could stroll up leisurely that evening. He seemed to always see the student who was standing alone, and make sure he or she was not alone for long! He got it. He got that the mission of FCA at our large public high school campus is what is most important—introducing students to Jesus Christ—and he is willing to do what it takes to see it accomplished.
Others want to be involved in leadership—after all, it looks good on college applications to be a leader of a campus club, right? But I want all to embody the servant part of leadership…so, along with my Bible, tablecloth, food, etc., I toted a 3-gallon jug with warm water, a metal basin and a towel. As the athletes were in a large circle around the fire, I approached a really dirty-footed young man and said, “May I wash your feet?”
As I began to rub the dirt off into the water with my hands, I told the students of our Lord, who on the night he was filled with anguish about what was coming, did the unthinkable! The Rabbi knelt down and washed the dirty feet of his disciples. “Jesus is our example, you guys—Jesus served his men out of love. It is the goal of FCA to love like that on campus—to lead on the soccer field, basketball court or in the classroom from the actions of Jesus—to have a heart to serve.”
Soon after, the lacrosse player with really clean feet smiled and said ‘thanks’.
