All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Mark 4:35-41 35 "That evening, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side." 36 Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus along in a boat just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A violent windstorm came up. The waves were breaking into the boat so that it was quickly filling up. 38 But he was sleeping on a cushion in the back of the boat. So they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to die?” 39 Then he got up, ordered the wind to stop, and said to the sea, "Be still, absolutely still!" The wind stopped blowing, and the sea became very calm. 40 He asked them, "Why are you such cowards? Don't you have any faith yet?" 41 They were overcome with fear and asked each other, "Who is this man? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"We all have read this story, and our faith in Jesus grows, as it must have been w/, His disciples from that day on. Jesus needed rest, so He fell asleep on a cushion. As it says a violent windstorm came up. Now these men were fishermen, they had been I’m sure in their fair share of storms on the water. I only point that out because, I believe it shows just how violent a storm it was. Yet, Jesus was not moved by it, the storm did not alarm Him. What His disciples failed to understand at that point, because Jesus was inside the boat, it did not matter what was going on outside. Fear had taken a hold of them, fear was controlling their actions. They had allowed the idea of danger, to be greater then the Peace of Jesus. His Peace was their Protection, His presence alone was more powerful then whatever was going around them. So when they woke Him up, they did it inspired by fear. All due respect to Jesus but, I think we can see He may had been a little grumpy. They had already seen enough of Jesus, and the Authority that He used. We understand that because of what Jesus said to the storm and to His disciples.
Mark 4:39 And having waked up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace, be stilled;' and the wind did lull, and there was a great calm: Young’s
Mat 8:26 "Why are you so easily frightened," He replied, "you men of little faith?" Then He rose and reproved the winds and the waves, and there was a perfect calm; Weymouth
And he said to them, Why are you full of fear, O you of little faith? Then he got up and gave orders to the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. BBE
Matt 8:27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him! "But the men were astonished... Darby
Weymouth and the men, filled with amazement, exclaimed, "What kind of man is this? for the very winds and waves obey him!"
When Jesus spoke, “Peace, be stilled;” “Calm down! Be Still!” “ Silence; be mute” No matter how he said it, all the different translations, I believe He was talking to the storm, the disciples, and to us !! It is to our benefit to see that we are the boat. Jesus is inside of us. When storms come as they do, instead of allowing fear to move us, we will stand on faith. The Word is clear in this, w/ Jesus Who is at rest in us, His Peace is more Powerful then anything else around us. Do we really believe disaster; catastrophe, will over take us. When the waves are coming in, Jesus is at rest inside of us, do we truly think that we will sink ? Be encouraged by these words, see how the Peace, the Power of Christ who is in you will protect and guide you through any storm. We will not sink, we will not be destroyed. Greater is He that is w/in you, then anything else. No matter what we face we, face it w/ Him. Do we see Jesus and failure together? Let us obey His Words to us, “Calm down! Be Still; Peace be Still.” These are not words to inspire defeat, but to usher in a state of mind. A mindset on Peace, on Trust in the One Who is inside of us, will keep us safe. No matter what happens, no matter how dark and turbulent it, not only seems but is, we are safe when we Trust in the Lord. When we let Jesus rest inside of us.

Hi Chris,

What a great illustration - we are the boat in this Bible passage. And it's really neat how you tie it into our lives today.

One thought, Bro, what if.......what if........... the boat sinks to the bottom of the sea...........but it's still great because Jesus is inside us, and that's when we need Him more than ever - for eternity. Amen.

Grace and Peace.
