Foolish and spontaneous vows or oaths: Judges chapter 11. Vs. 1 – 38.
Jephtah, son of a prostitute, vowed to kill the first thing he saw when returning home from a victorious battle over the Ammonites.
The first thing he saw turned out to be his beloved and only daughter.
He fulfilled his vow, his daughter was killed.
Question:
Having realised his mistake would his better response have been to revoke his vow and repent for his foolishness?
A loving God would have forgiven him, knowing his weakness.
A heartless God may have asked for rectification of some sort but in either case his innocent daughter would have been spared.
We have all made foolish vows.
I believe that a foolish vow made in haste should be realised as such and repentance and forgiveness sought, rather than to fulfil the vow causing more hurt and pain.
What do you think?
