"Unkind judgment of others will be judicially returned upon ourselves..." - Jamieson, Fausset, & Brown Commentary
"You shall be judged by the same rule which you apply to others." - Barnes' Notes
Even though Psalm 109:17-19 refers to the wicked man, there is a lesson in this passage of Scripture for all of us. Let's prayerfully study it and see what important warning we can derive from it.
"As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually."
This man "loved" cursing or to curse others. This is not referring to the use of vulgar or foul language, but rather to the instances when a person utters slanderous and abusive statements against another or defames, disgraces, maligns, or accuses them in front of others. It also refers to any time when a "wounded" individual retaliates by invoking evil upon an abuser. In each case, the curse is intended to destroy a human being, his position, family, or reputation.
Generally speaking, the wicked - being the friend of the devil - hate good and hunt after evil. Oftentimes, they are out to ruin the godly whom God has blessed. At times, it seems as though they take great pleasure in the act of cursing others.
David went on to say about them that they - "delight not in blessing." In other words, they take no pleasure in blessing...are not inclined to bless others ... and are not pleased to see others happy and prosperous. They do not desire nor promote the welfare of others... take no pleasure in wishing them well or seeing them do well...feel no joy in another man's good fortune... won't lift a hand to do another a service...frown and fret when another prospers...and give none a good word, good wish, or good turn.
This "love" for cursing was so much a part of the wicked man's life that the Psalmist described it as a garment which the man wore all of the time or as water that entered into his body and oil into his bones. It was deeply a part of his being. His entire nature felt its effects.
It was a perpetual dress - a garment or a girdle about him. He chose to put it on...wear it...and appear in it before all. It was as natural to him as dressing himself. It was as though he drank curses - "come into his bowels like water" - or bathed in them - "like oil into his bones." They surrounded him and were wrapped around him like "a garment" or "a girdle."
But what does the Bible say about the man who is always wishing evil on another or who can't wish well to others, see them prosper, or do good to them?
It is evident by the phrases beginning with "as he..." and ending with "so let it..."
"As he loved cursing..."
"...as he delighted not in blessing..."
"As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment..."
Because "he loved cursing," "cursing" comes back on him.
Because "he delighted not in blessing," blessing and all good is withdrawn from him.
Because "he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment," "cursing" clings to him so tightly that he can't get loose of it.
This man got what he loved. He ended up drinking what he brewed for others. He was judged by his own rule.
O Christian, are you guilty of the same crimes as the wicked man?
In your hurt, pain, and grief, have you retaliated unto others with words or prayers of cursing rather than blessing?
Or do you have a problem whereby you cannot stand to see certain people get ahead or prosper - because they have treated you unkindly in the past?
Take warning from the wicked man! Because "he loved cursing" and "delighted not in blessing" others, "cursing" became a recognizable part of his life - so much so that he couldn't shake himself loose of it.
No one in their right mind wants to be "cursed" or to have "cursing" follow them all of their days.
In Psalm 23:6, David made this confession - "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life..."
But the opposite will happen if you act like the wicked man and wish evil on those around you or begrudge them of any good.
Which do you love today - blessing or cursing?
You will get what you love to give out to others.
That is a promise!
May God Bless His Word,
Connie
