THE COMFORTER
There is a false comfort, a deadly comfort, that can come from alcohol, drug abuse, pornography, or other self-destructive substances, or habits, that all too often result in misery and death while at the same time promising nirvana.
We all know those who have, or are, destroying their lives because they are so disparate to find some kind of comfort in their tormented souls.
There is a true comfort for soul.
This comfort comes with a promise that will not lead to misery and death, but to an abundant life. This is a descriptive of the Holy Spirit, who is Called the Comforter.
Jesus said, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” (John 16:7 KJV)
Jesus also said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” (John 14:16 KJV)
Jesus promised, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” ( John 14:26 KJV)
The first question that needs to be answered is how does the Holy Spirit Comfort us?
The Holy Spirit doesn’t comfort us by manipulating our feelings or giving us a spiritual sedative as some may think.. His way of comforting is vastly different, and is outlined clearly in Scripture.
No matter what the problem, trial or need, the Holy Spirit's ministry of comfort is accomplished by bringing truth to the situation.
Jesus said, “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the
Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.” (John 15:26)
The fact is, our comfort springs from what we know, (the truth) not by what we feel.
Only the truth can over rule our feelings.
The comforting ministry of the Holy Spirit begins with this foundational truth:
“No matter what the situation, the problem, or affliction; "
comfort is needed.”
Now, suddenly, a voice is heard, echoing through every corridor of the soul.
It is the voice of the Holy Spirit, declaring to that soul,
“Nothing can separate you from the love of God!”
This truth — once you believe it — quickly becomes a gusher of living water, sweeping away all those thing that have a strong hold upon our souls.
The truth here is that the Father sent us his Spirit to show us just how interested he is in every aspect of our lives. He has been sent as our friend, our comforter, our guide.
Jesus says to all who follow him, “I will not leave you comfortless.”
He’s telling us, in other words, “I am sending you One who will defend and keep you.”
He is saying, “I won’t leave you helpless or powerless, vulnerable to Satan’s wiles.
Rejoice, because I’m sending you One whose power is greater than every other power in the universe.”
“Hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:5)
The Greek meaning here is even stronger than the translation suggests.
It says that the love of God is caused to
“gush forth” in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
You might have an unbearable burden that is causing fear, shame, sorrow, afflictions, temptations, and discouragement. “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 14:26,).
The Comforter is with us if we are a believers, He will remind us of the truth revealed in the Word of God. (The Bible) then He will bring to us comfort, and help in our time of need.
