All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count).

Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection.

Not all Christian churches observe Lent. Lent is mostly observed by the Lutheran,Methodist, Presbyterian and Anglican denominations, and also by Roman Catholics. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

The Bible does not mention the custom of Lent, however, the practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21.

Let's enter with meditation, reflection and reverence for God our Saviour, as we remember Him . . .

Yes & Amen sister! As a fellow intercessor, I can't agree more. Yes, it sure pleases the Lord when the wider body of Christ join together and fast around this time to seek the Lord for their families and their nations. In S'pore (being the Antioch of Asia), we will enter into a season of 40-days fast & pray (www.lovesingapore.org.sg) from the 1st July to the 9th August (our national day), as we break forth into celebration . . .

Peter,

Lent in my opinion is a wonderful Catholic tradition, it is a good thing to give this time to God, I do not agree with the ashes part but the fasting part is wonderful, I know of couple Catholic ladies who participate in Lent and let me tell you, I see their humility and their sincerity of hearts that they are giving this time to the Lord and I see good fruit coming out from their lives after they are done fasting. It would be nice if all those who call themselves Christians join together and fast around this time to seek the Lord for their families and their nations, powerful!

Amen! Am excited at your level of intimacy with the Lord Jesus! May I be like you in my journey of FAITH.
Indeed, Christ IN us (24/7), the hope of glory! (Colossians 1:27)

Everyday I am blown away by what Jesus suffered for my sins and when I think of what He suffered I just want to weep and this is everyday not just an appointed season on some church callendar. My time with my Lord is all day every day He is my constant companion regardless of what is going on , even if I am in a corporate meeting God is there to keep me straight and to reveal undercurrents and show me what is true and what is not. so I guess one could say i am in constant communication and contact with my Lord.

Agreed. Thanks for sharing one of the history of early Catholic Church. To me, LENT is a season of a year where I chose to remember my Saviour when He was preparing to enter into SUFFERING for all our sins and to redeem us. I take special effort to be MINDFUL on my thoughts and behaviour daily, and using it to meditate and to instill a sense of reverence for God, simultaneously reflecting on MY relationship with fellowmen. This my spiritual act of worship, what's yours?!

Lent is not biblical it something instituted by the Catholic Church along with worshiping all the idols in their churches.(mary, and the so called saints) they have also lied to millions of people for generations about the fact that they (the priests) can forgive our sins.

Only Jesus can do that, and real christians reflect on the sacrifice of our Lord everyday not just at certain times of the year, Because we need to confess our sins to Him everyday and He is faithful to forgive us. No man can forgive our sins and No man can save us,

The rituals and man made rules of most churches are in direct conflict with the Word, because Jesus died to set us free not to tie us up in man made bondage.
