Spiritual Consequences of Abortion

Genesis 1:27 says God made mankind "in His own image." Obviously we are different than the animals, and God views us as special--including the baby He has made in your womb.

People often consider pregnancy an accident, but God takes credit for forming the baby in the womb. "This is what the LORD says--he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you."12 David told God, "[Y]ou created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb."13

God personally knows your baby before birth. God told Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."14 The prophet Isaiah said the same thing. "Before I was born the LORD called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name."15

In fact, God loves your baby so much that when He gave the Ten Commandments, He said, "If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined.... But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life...."16 That's a stricter penalty than God established for any other accidental death, so God really values babies' lives.

Ritual infanticide was common in the cultures around Israel, but God ordered anyone who murdered a baby this way to be put to death.17

The same God who said, "You shall not murder," also said, "The soul that sinneth, it shall die."18 The Bible continues to promise unending punishment in Hell to murderers in the New Testament. "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur."
