A few of us have started a discovery into John's gopel. The group is called Jesus Discovery. It's not a study where you have someone teaching the others, but rather it IS a DISCOVERY, where we are all discovering more about Jesus together.
Anyhow, here's something that the Lord unfolded to me this morning from our reading in chapter 1. John starts off:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." (v1-2)
Of course, the Word was Jesus, but how does that work? What does it mean? So, this morning, cup of tea in hand, and my study Bible, my Vines Dictionary and Zodhiates Lexicon (I meant business), I went out to the front verandah to explore some more.
I thought I might have had a clue. I knew there were two words in the Greek for the word "word", and those are LOGOS and RHEMA. I thought it might have had something to do with that.
But I was wrong!! The word used here for Jesus is LOGOS, the same as the written Word. So I've dug a bit deeper. Here's what I've found:
One definition for LOGOS: It firstly means intelligence, and then the words as an expression of that intelligence. (from Zodhiates)
And that's like what we are trying to do here in the Bible study. We all have some intelligent thoughts, but the trick is to communicate those thoughts in words so others can understand them.
And then I see it with the Bible. It is God's intelligence put into words that we can understand, which is one way God communicates to us.
And what about Jesus? Here's what I found:
## In His pre-incarnate state (before He came to earth as a baby) He is called ho Logos, the WORD.
In other words, He is the first immaterial Intelligence. He is GOD!! God was there, but because of mankind's sin, no one could really know what He was like. We'd know there was some super-intelligence out there, but how could He even remotely connect to us, let alone being able to know Him personally? Jesus was there in the beginning. He was involved in creation.
## And then, in His incarnation (after He was conceived in Mary's womb), He was the expression of that Intelligence in a "language" that people could understand. He was the Intelligent God in the flesh, for all to see. And as Jesus has said that if we have seen Him, we have seen the Father. (...need to find the reference.)
And then I read this in my bible notes:
Jesus is the LIVING Logos; (John 1:1)
The Bible is the WRITTEN Logos; (Heb 4:12)
The Holy Spirit utters the SPOKEN Logos. (1 Cor 2:13)
So now, it is all much clearer for me!! It was like someone turned the light on!! A great morning tea!!
