“Trust in the LORD and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light And your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger and forsake wrath;
Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.” ( Psalms 37:3-8 NAS )
I would like to take a close look at these verses that King David wrote. These few verses are filled with instruction and wisdom that we all need to embrace.
Trust
Trust is being sure, it is being confident, it is having a since of security that leads to boldness and hope in the Lord. It is a relationship of reliance. “Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” ( Psalms 62:8 )
"Trust in the LORD forever, For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock. ( Isaiah 26:4 ) Do good
Do good things, do beautiful things , do your best, and do it cheerfully . To have a blessed life in Christ we need to have en excellence in everything that we do, not only in the work place, but in our homes.
“May this God of peace prepare you to do every good thing he wants. May he work in us through Jesus Christ to do what is pleasing to him. Glory belongs to Jesus Christ forever. Amen.” ( Hebrews 13:21 GWT )
Dwell
This means to abide, or to continue. To dwell is to inhabit something, it means to remain, rest, reside, or permanently stay. This is an action word because
Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. ( Psalm 23:6)
“One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple.” ( Psalms 27:4 )
Cultivate faithfulness
We cultivate faithfulness by practicing being faithful, as we feed on His faithfulness. We are acting like God when we are practicing being faithful because he is faithful.
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” ( 2 Timothy 2:13 )
“God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” ( 1 Corinthians 1;9 )
Delight yourself in the Lord,
We are to be happy in the Lord because we have the joy of the LORD that brings delight to our hearts. To delight yourself in the Lord is to delight in His will and then he will give us the desires of our hearts.
For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done, I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands. ( Psalm 92:4 )
I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I muse on the work of Your hands. ( Psalm 143:5 )
Commit your way to the Lord
There has to be a time when we finally commit our ways to the LORD and put our confidence in Him. Then He will bring forth your righteousness as the light And your judgment as the noonday.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. ( John 14:6 )
By a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh.
Hebrews 10:20 )
Rest in the LORD
To rest is to forbear, hold peace, quiet self, rest, be silent, keep (put to) silence, be (stand) still, tarry, wait. We are to rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Waiting upon the Lord doesn't mean the same thing as waiting for a bus. There are some things we can be doing while we are waiting. We can be in prayer, study the Scriptures, or in fellowship with other believers, etc.
Some times the wait is very difficult. David said, “I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.”
“My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.” ( Psalm 62:5)
Do not fret
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes we find ourselves incensed. It is so hard not to burn with anger because it appears that the wicked are getting away with something. We grieve in our hearts and everything in us wants to scream out for justice. But if we are going to have a blessed life in Christ we are going to have to leave the evil doer in the hands of the Lord.
Conclusion
All these things in Psalms 37:3-8 are a description of some practical things that should be implemented into our personal life with the help of the Holy Spirit. This is of utmost important for all of us as we grow in our walk with the Lord. These are things, that if we obey them will remove many of the road blocks that come up in our lives hindering our relationship with the Lord. It is a surrendering of ourselves to the will of the Lord.
