They stumbled in the early morning darkness as they made their way to the tomb where Jesus was buried. Both women were determined to complete the burial preparations of their friend, they weren't sure how they were going to move the stone covering the entrance but they were determined to proceed with their plans one way or another. As they approached the tomb they stared with astonishment and disbelief. The stone covering the entrance had been moved. They stooped, looking into the tomb and it was empty, the body was gone. They continued to stare in disbelief asking themselves who would have stolen the body of Jesus? But wait...there is somebody in here. A young man, wearing the whitest robe they had ever seen, was sitting on the place where Jesus body had been laid. As the women stared in astonishment at the strange young man he spoke to them, " Don't be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified and laid to rest in this tomb. He's been raised up, He is alive. Go quickly and tell His disciples, especially Peter that Jesus will meet them in Galilee." Both women left the tomb stunned they couldn't grasp the meaning from all this. What was going on? The one woman started to leave to go to the house were the disciples were staying, turning she realized her friend was not following but was standing there in the early morning light looking dazed, overcome with grief. The first woman tried to persuade the second to go with her but she just shook her head in disbelief and indicated her friend should go on without her. As she stood gazing at the empty tomb, her thoughts in turmoil she was convinced someone had stolen the body of the man who had delivered her from demonic possession and released her from her burden of guilt and shame. Hearing a noise she looked up and saw a man whom she presumed was the gardener. weeping, she approached the gardener who looked asked her why she was weeping. She replied, "Someone has taken my Master's body and I don't know where they put Him. Sir, if you have taken Him please tell me where you have put Him so I can care for His body." The Gardener gazed intently at her and softly called her name, "Mary." She looked at the gardener through her tears and in disbelief and joy cried out "Teacher!" She fell on her knees and clung to His feet weeping now with great joy. Jesus gently removed her hands and said, "Mary don't cling to me so. I am not going to leave you for awhile." He further instructed her to go and tell His disciples that He would soon be ascending to His Father and theirs. Mary left to carry out her Master's instructions to His disciples.
Mary was not alone in her rejoicing at her Master's resurrection. If one listened carefully one might have heard trumpets along with angelic singing accompanied by the saints as they peered down at the joyous scene below. Voices yet unheard would echo forth the joy, praise and thanksgiving of God's Redemptive Work .
