Understand that I'm not a religious person and at times my faith or belief in God truly waivers. The older I get, the more race and the subject of it concerns me. I have a daughter that will sooner or later face blatant racism. That is not what bothers me. It's the under-handed, closeted, "I have black friends" type of racism that will hurt most.
With that said, I'm researching for my own blog as well as my thesis, both focusing on race and religion and how one affects the other. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Race affects all aspects of life.
I don't want to be right about the subject. In fact, I've been trying to prove myself wrong since I started these projects. But, the more I read Bible excerpts, scholarly journals, books, religious websites and other blogs, I have to state that I've found one of the three in each case of negative response to this subject;
Racist comments and attempts to use the Bible or science as justification, or
Thinly-veiled racism (in case your boss or co-workers read your posts) using the Bible or science as justification or
Naive-yet-skeptical comments using the Bible or science as justification.
I found that the most racially inflammatory remarks were made on religious websites. Sites dedicated to love, mankind and fellowship in celebrating God and his glory. What a contradiction.
I'm curious to know how you feel about the subject. How can we preach, teach and revel in God's glory with one hand and hate, relegate and vilify with the other hand?
Maybe I do believe in God, but I don't believe in that God.
