This passage of scripture was the text of the very first message (sermon) I spoke about or from, It was given when I was asked by our Sectional A/G Youth Leader at our monthly sectional service to speak at the last minute.
That night the ones graduating high school that year (1962) from the cities represented in our section were to speak about 5 minutes each on their favorite passage of scripture that influenced our school years & that helped us during our school years (something like that the reason for our brief testimonies).
Our sectional leader came to me and ask if I could speak about 10 minutes as someone did not make it to the service. I said okay I guess. I had verses 5 & 6 of this chapter (Psalms 37) already chosen for my testimony. I began to speak on those verses & it ended up (always was long winded I guess and a preacher even back at age 17) speaking for about 20 minutes at least!
The Holy Spirit took over & all seemed to be praising God & many afterward said I really enjoyed your sermon! It was supposed to be just my testimony. Well, it was but my testimony was that whole chapter! It still is today! PTL! Amen!
Let us read that chapter again copied here below (out loud please):
Psalm 37 (New King James Version)
A Psalm of David.
1 Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb.
3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. 6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday.
7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.
9 For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth. 10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
12 The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth. 13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming. 14 The wicked have drawn the sword And have bent their bow, To cast down the poor and needy, To slay those who are of upright conduct. 15 Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken.
16 A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, But the LORD upholds the righteous.
18 The LORD knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever. 19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. 20 But the wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the LORD, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away.
21 The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. 22 For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. 26 He is ever merciful, and lends; And his descendants are blessed.
27 Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell forevermore. 28 For the LORD loves justice, And does not forsake His saints; They are preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; None of his steps shall slide.
32 The wicked watches the righteous, And seeks to slay him. 33 The LORD will not leave him in his hand, Nor condemn him when he is judged.
34 Wait on the LORD, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it. 35 I have seen the wicked in great power, And spreading himself like a native green tree. 36 Yet he passed away,[a] and behold, he was no more; Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.
37 Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; For the future of that man is peace. 38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in the time of trouble. 40 And the LORD shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them, Because they trust in Him.
I will not preach that sermon again as the scripture speaks for itself. I will just give you the outline (not written but spoken to me as I spoke that night) only. Let the Holy Spirit speak what He wants you to hear from this passage a new and a fresh right now in Jesus Name! Bless the reading of this Word Lord!
MESSAGE HIGHLIGHTS (OUTLINE) THE LORD GAVE ME FIRST ON JUNE, 1962 AT OUR SECTIONAL YOUTH SERVICE GIVEN AT MILL CITY, PA A/G CHURCH-JUNE, 1962.
1. FRET NOT -Don't fret or worry or be envious of others who are not God's children (evildoers). They may seem to have things going their way & have all they need or want, but those things will pass away!
2. TRUST in the Lord! Don't trust in others or what they have or don't have! Don't do evil as they do but do good! Be faithful to the Lord and feed on His faithfulness. Remember He will never fail us we have His Word on it! He will never leaves us nor forsakes us!
3: DELIGHT in Him! Let Him be your delight! When you delight in someone you just love them & your whole world centers around that person! You trust them! You desire to please that person! Well, He delights in you when you delight in Him!
When you truly delight in Him alone not follow after/desire the things of this world then and only then will He give you not just your needs met but the desires of your heart! He sees the heart & knows it's desires even when we never tell Him. He loves us so much He care about those desires! We just need to not fret, trust Him & delight in Him (put Him first Matt. 6:33).
4. Next you need to COMMIT your way to the Lord! Give it all to Him! Don't hold back a part of things that you think you can handle yourself! When you really commit it all to Him and TRUST in Him read my two favorite verses of this chapter 5 & 6 to see what He will do when we commit & trust it to Him!
Praise the Lord He will bring it to pass! Bring what to pass you ask? He will bring His Will to pass in our life & work things out always for our good! He will do what we cannot do! He will bring victory & always prove His self faithful! Great is His faithfulness praise the Lord!
5. REST-Then it's all about resting in Him! Patience a virtue we all work on everyday, amen? Amen! When we do what I mentioned so far then we need to just rest in Him. Not looking at how others receive and we have not seen our needs/desires met or given us like those in the world. (see verse 7).
6.CEASE FROM ANGER! This is an important part of it all! If we become angry & walk in strife & not love to others who seemingly receive answers, prosper, etc. If we don't love & truly forgive others we will only not receive anything from Him, but it will even go against us causing us harm! (verse 8)!
7. What happens to evildoers & what happens than to us? Well, He takes a lot of time (verses 9-33) to give us that answer! The meek , those who are meek not sissy like accept all evil from others. We are not to love the sin, but love the sinner as He does. To be meek is to be gentle, kind, loving! All that can be summed up as those who are truly Christ like in their daily walk! Read carefully verses 9-33.
8. What now? Now we just WAIT ON THE LORD! That's right wait! Another word for PATIENCE! We don't like to wait on Him to take care of things we want to do it ourselves or we want Him to take care of others or other things and do it NOW! Amen? Amen! We all have done it or still do it many times! We try to care for ourselves instead of waiting & let Him work things out! (1 Peter 5:7 & Romans 8:28).
What shall we do while we wait? We are to KEEP HIS WAYS! His way of doing things are called righteous ways. His ways of doing things right! Keeping His Word! Staying in Faith & Walking in Love to others even if not lovable in the natural!
What will happen to us if/when/while we do wait on the Lord? He will exalt us to inherit the land. (Read verse 34). What is His is ours if we walk in love & obey His Word!
What happens to the wicked? It is not good news for those who don't do what the chapter has told us we must do so far. To save time read what happens to them in verses 35,36.
He calls us that have been washed in His blood and doing what this Psalm and all His Word tells us to do, blameless ones! Praise the Lord! We are new creatures in Christ Jesus! Therefore, we are blameless being washed white as snow by His precious blood, amen? Amen!
In closing I want to say that if we truly DELIGHT IN HIM, TRUST IN HIM & COMMIT OUR ALL TO HIM HE WILL GIVE US THE DESIRES OF OUR HEART! Are you truly delighting in Him today? Then do what He says in this chapter daily & see Him bring it to pass! What is it you desire? First of all desire Him and the things of God (Matthew 6:33) & than He will do the rest!
Summing it up:
FRET NOT TRUST (IN HIM) DELIGHT (IN HIM) COMMIT (IT ALL TO HIM) CEASE FROM ANGER (FORGIVE NOT WALK IN STRIFE BUT LOVE) DEPART FROM EVIL & DO GOOD (TO ALL) REST IN HIM (KEEP STANDING IN FAITH/PRAISE HIM) WAIT ON THE LORD-(wait for Him to do it not DIY)
Teach us Lord to do these things knowing your faithful who has promised. Help us Lord to not just read your Word, but be doers of the Word! Amen! I pray the blessing upon this message once again as when it was first given to me by you Lord so many years ago at age 17! Shalom everyone!
Let us follow His example/His Word and pray as He did "Not our will but thine be done Lord"! Let us truly delight in Him as He delighted in His Father!
