All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I am sure many remember taking their first child home from the hospital. The first time the baby experiences the outside world. The slow ride home white knuckling, driving 20 miles below the speed limit because of the precious cargo that you were transporting. Well that was me in a nutshell.

All I could think about was all the hard work and emotions that occurred leading up to this trip home. I had one eye on the road and one on the car seat. If my memory serves correctly, I do believe Lynn was in the backseat for extra caution.

I remember that long walk up to the house (our garage was detached and quite a ways from the house up on a hill) This house was not meant for little children.

So ever so gently we made it up to the door with Sawyer hooked up to his heart monitor. Let me tell you about this machine. It does serve a great purpose if everything is intact. Well Sawyer kept us on our toes by pulling off the leads causing the monitor to go off. I lost count of how many times that alarm would go off in the middle of the night, and every time Lynn would beat me to the crib. (even though she was on the farthest side of the bed)

There was one time that it actually was for real as the alarm stopped prior to us getting to his crib (which was in the next room ten feet away) I remember this so clearly. We both got to the crib and looked down and he let out this big sigh. This was him catching his breath. This provided us great comfort knowing that he was strong enough to regain his breathing.

After that night and several false alarms later we decided enough was enough. We just were not getting any sleep. We were always on high alert. So we brought the monitor in to get read. They hook it up to a machine to check how many episodes he had. There was only that one. All the rest were false alarms. We discussed with the doctor and he said it was okay to take him off the monitor because of how quickly he got his breath back from the single episode that he did have.

It still took us quite a while to sleep in peace. The Lord was always there, but I didn't know it. I needed to go through these hard times to become the parent that He wanted me to be. I now cherish those memories for the wisdom that was taught. I am a firm believer in the fact that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. I do believe that He helps us handle what we are given.
