my mother believes this happened because maybe people were worhiping this statue and it made God angry, i have to say i agree!

You can't be serious. If lightning struck a Pagan idol, say a representation of Zeus, would that be a sign that Zeus is or should be "on fire for God?"

The Bible is clear and unambiguous about idolatry.

Exodus 20:4 comes to mind:

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

It's one of the 10 Commandments, remember?
