The shocking power of Jesus.

Have you ever noticed that Jesus led a very full life?  There was nothing shy or retiring about our Lord.  In Luke 8, the historian captured several scenes and encounters of Jesus in the towns around the Galilee and on the Galilee herself, as Jesus taught, healed, quieted a storm and even rested. Nothing in the Lord’s economy was wasted.

We learned of several women in and around Jesus’ ministry, some by name.

And then in the 56 verses of chapter 8, Luke told of

Jesus’

>parable of the sower: Jesus was a brilliant teacher, unequalled, using the simple

things to illustrate deeper spiritual meaning.

>explanation of the parable: a story that was not about seed, but rather our individual

ability to hear the truth and then act on it and walk in it daily

>teaching that lights were not meant to be hidden, but indeed to scatter light. Friend,

we have the Light the world is looking for—Jesus Christ who still forgives and

redeems us for this life and eternity

>mother and brothers coming to collect him, as though he was not in his right mind,1

[Yes, Jesus had four brothers- James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon.]2

>setting sail on the great lake, falling asleep. Jesus rested even in the

throes of a storm; after all, he would then calm that storm.

-->>**In our storms, Jesus is with us and will not leave us to our own devices.

>Luke told how Jesus freed a man of demons, exhibiting such power over evil it caused people to be afraid3, so they asked Jesus to go away. He did.

Jesus did not stay where he was unwanted—same thing is true today.

Luke concludes with Jesus'

>two miracles that had their beginnings 12 years earlier

So let’s take a look at the people in these miracles:

"Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”4

[Then Jesus goes to Jairus’s house and raises his 12-year-old daughter from the dead.

Mic drop, Jesus]

So much to say from my heart, because Jesus’ actions have traction in my mind.  At the darkest time in my life when I did not know the right words to pray, I pictured myself like that desperate lonely, socially ostracized woman, reaching for Jesus, knowing it was my reach/my faith that would turn his head toward me.  Ah yes, if only I could touch the hem of Jesus’ garment . . . then, I would have hope, and I too could be whole.

As I write, I think of several who are not even sure what to ask God for – or what should be the priority of their deepest needs.  May I humbly suggest we bring all of who we are, all of the people we love who have great needs, all of the fear and uncertainty that weighs us down, to ALL of who Jesus is.  Look back at the shocking, powerful, compassionate, truthful elements of Jesus, just in this one chapter!  Jesus is not only good, he is great.  He is not just moved by our pain, he wants to relieve our burden and carry it for us.
