I’ll never be good enough!
Sadly, I’ll never be good enough is one of the most popular reasons for why people are not interested in Christianity. The overwhelming consensus is that Christians are self absorbed, self righteous, goodie two shoes, who think that they are better than the rest of the world. The truth of the matter is this is true of some Christians just as it is with the rest of the population.
The opposite is also true where we think that we are good people and that we don’t really hurt anyone by our actions and that there are a lot worse people in the world than you.
True practising Christian’s strive to be giving, loving people who are humbled before God. True Christian’s have nothing to prove to the world. They are not part of this world. Any Christian worth their weight in salt knows that they are sinners saved by the grace of God. Not that they are saved by anything that they have or haven’t done.
No one is ever good enough to earn their way to God. We are all sinners. We all need saving. It just isn’t possible for any of us to earn our way to Heaven.
If we take time to look at the Ten Commandments you can’t help but realize that we all fall terribly short of perfection. Not just you, that goes for all of us. Here is the Ten Commandments, take your time and go over each one. Ask yourself have I broken any of these Commandments, even just one. Do you think that there is anyone alive who hasn’t broken at least one?
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. |
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My Commandments. |
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. |
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. |
“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. |
“You shall not murder. |
“You shall not commit adultery. |
“You shall not steal. |
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. |
“You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s.” So I am sure that as you were going over these and there were a few that you thought to yourself, I haven’t broken that one, I haven’t killed anyone. Or I have never betrayed my marriage or maybe you think that you are a good person and that these rules don’t apply? Well the truth is if you see yourself the way Jesus taught us that God sees us, you would look at what you have done in your heart and mind along with the physical. Have you thought sexually about a person on TV? Then you have committed adultery. Have you ever lied then you’re a liar. Have you ever been so mad that you wish someone dead? You have committed murder! Have you gone shopping on the Sabbath? Perhaps you wished that you owned your neighbours home or car? Or have you felt angry because someone other than you got a promotion at work? Have you chosen to watch a hockey game instead of going to church? Have you ever gossiped? Have you fought with your parents? Do you show love to everyone you meet? Wow, suddenly the whole, but I am a good person thing, falls apart and the truth is we will never do it on our own. Thank God for His gift of His Son, Jesus who took on all the sins of the world and died to cover our sins. Jesus died for us and rose again to deliver us from evil. So that we could die to sin and live again through Him. He is perfect and He has never sinned and His love for us feeble, weak, human beings is so strong that He covered our sin so that we although we will never be good enough to enter the presence of God, are clean and presentable to God the father because the Son has covered our transgressions. What a beautiful thing! So through Christ Jesus and only through Jesus are we ever good enough to be with God. Author; Rachelle FG Van Ryssen |
