How Long?

Proverbs 1:20-1:29

This Proverb was written by Solomon Son of David. Solomon finished the Temple that David started and when he dedicated the building to GOD his glory filled the temple. GOD appeared to Solomon and asked what shall I give thee and Solomon ask for an understanding heart that he may be able to discern between good and evil to judge his people and Solomon’s speech pleased the Lord and not only did he grant this request but he also gave Solomon riches and honor. The theme for the book of Proverbs is Wisdom and wisdom comes with fear of the Lord. Psalms 111 tells us the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. When we talk about fear of the Lord we are not talking about being afraid of GOD but reverence, respect, admiration.

Along with Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes also written by Solomon are classified as wisdom books of the bible. First Kings 4:32 tells us that Solomon spoke 3,000 proverbs which are not all recorded in the Bible but probably recorded in the official King’s Records and all people and all Kings from all the earth came to hear King Solomon speak because they heard of his wisdom.


As we zoom into these verses we hear the call of Wisdom and the Call of Folly. In Proverbs Wisdom is pictured as a lovely woman who calls people to follow her into a life of blessings and success. Folly is her adversary or the opposite of Wisdom and pictured as a wicked woman who tempts the foolish and leads them to hell. The wisdom I am referring to is not the wisdom of this world but the wisdom of GOD.

Conventional wisdom would have us to believe that 1+1+1 = 3 but GODLY wisdom let’s us know that 1+1+1= one GOD in three persons. Conventional wisdom takes it’s lead from the masses and GODLY wisdom takes it’s lead from the master.

The Wisdom in the book of Proverbs is a typology of Christ. Wisdom is described as eternal, wisdom is described as the creator of all things, and the beloved of GOD.

The word folly is defined as a state of being foolish or being a fool and a fool is someone who does something stupid or senseless. The apostle Paul called the preaching of Christ crucified “foolishness” in the eyes of the unbeliever. For believers, the message of the cross is the power and wisdom of GOD. A fool has said in his heart that there is no GOD.

Proverbs mentions three classes of people who need wisdom, the fool, the simple and the scorner.

The first is the fool who hates instruction and is self-confident. He speaks without thinking.

The second is the simple ones are those who believe everything and everybody and lack discernment. They are easily led astray because they lack understanding and knowledge of GOD. One theologian said they repeatedly walk into trouble. We can’t believe in everybody who say they come prophesying over us even if it comes true because the bible tells us that even the false prophets will have power liken unto GOD but they are designed to lead you to other gods or to lead you straight to hell.

The third is the scorners they mock at GOD’s wisdom because it is too high for them but they won’t admit it because they know everything.

As we look at our scriptures we have an invitation being extended from Wisdom and another from Folly. Wisdom extends the invitation to discipleship and offers salvation and Folly extends an invitation that makes sin appear to be very attractive and there is a way that seems right unto man but the way thereof is destruction and her feet go down to death and her steps are straight to hell. Folly will cause you to loose your reputation, your possessions, your health and your very life.




The only way to detect folly is to walk with wisdom. You can go to school for the rest of your life and watch Dr. Phil and Oprah everyday but you won’t get this type of wisdom that comes from GOD. You can read a book every week but you still can’t get the type of wisdom that comes from the Lord.

The scorner rejected wisdom and met destruction
The fool rejected wisdom and was lead to death
The simple rejected wisdom and went to hell.


How long will we deny and reject the word of GOD. He said “No Weapon formed against you shall prosper” A co-worker said to me during Hurricane Charley my house and car was completely destroyed what you got to say about that preacher, No weapon formed huh? I looked at him up and down and he looked good and I said the word says No weapon formed against you, he didn’t say anything about your house, your car, your stuff. If you had some wisdom and would just study the word of GOD you would know what I am talking about.

The voice of wisdom is crying out on the streets saying eat of my bread and drink of my wine but there are other cries out on the streets trying to get our children and the lost ones.

There’s the cry to our young people to make a fast buck to sell drugs


How long we simple ones will we love simplicity meaning how long will we continue to take the easy road and do things without effort. Instead of taking the road less traveled.

How long will the scorners delight in their own scorning meaning how long will we be in contempt with GOD. How long will we continue to fight against GOD. Someone said your arms are too short to box with GOD.

How long will the fools hate knowledge? How long will you be un-teachable? How long will you be absentee from Bible Study and Sunday School?

How long will we renig on GOD instead of stepping up to the plate and doing what GOD has created us to do.

How long will we keep running from the Lord. You can run but you can’t hide. He might not be calling you to preach but the Lord is calling you to do something.

How long will you continue to be sick in your body and not come to the elders of the church and allow them lay hands on you, anoint you with oil and they prayer of faith shall save the sick.

How long will you be a firecracker Christian get set on fire and just fizzle out and turn out to be a dud? The Lord is looking for some Christians with consistent commitment, consistent with our duties, consistent in our prayers, consistent in our responsibility and consistent in our giving

How long will we neglect on our responsibilities and what you said you would do for the Lord?

How long will we choose wickedness over righteousness?

How long will we choose ignorance instead of wisdom?

Let me tell you a story about Jesus. There came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you

How long will we choose to come to church haphazardly every other Sunday? Come late and leave early

How long will we cry out woe is me because greater is he that is within me than he that is in the world.

How long will we choose total chaos and mass confusion over peace and when you have a piece of GOD you have peace with GOD this peace passeth all understanding

How long will we choose darkness instead of coming into the marvelous light?

How long will we struggle with that sin because deliverance is available to you. All I have to do is take my burdens to the Lord and leave it there and lay aside every weight and sin that so easily beset us.

You might be asking How Long will I continue to suffer, and how long will I continue to go through. I don’t know but as long as your going through. Keep on praising GOD, As long as you are going through Keep on serving the Lord.

How Long will the storms keep on raging in your life because I heard a voice it’s Jesus saying peace be still. When Jesus speaks the sea billows got to stop rolling, the winds got to stop blowing, the lightning got to stop flashing and the thunder got to stop clapping

I don’t know how long but I don’t have to wait till the battle is over I can shout right now

How long will we choose death over life, Jesus said I come that you might have life and that you have it more abundantly.

How long will we continue to be conformed to this world instead of being transformed by the renewing of our minds?


How long does Jesus have to stand knocking at the door, Jesus said I stand at the door knocking and if any man hear my voice and open the door I will come in and sup with him and he with me.


How long will we have a zeal of GOD but not according to knowledge and how long will we be ignorant of GOD’s righteousness and establish our own righteousness.

Joshua asked the question “How long will it take before you begin to take possession of the land that the Lord, the GOD of your fathers has given to you. In other long How long are you going to wait for your blessing, reach out and grab it go ahead and take it.

If our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost. How long will you be classified as the lost?

How long will you sit in your seat and not praise the lord? When the praises go up the blessing will come down.

How long will we deny the crucifixion story of Jesus coming down through 42 generations and taking an old rugged cross out to a hill called Calvary where he hung bled and died and how long was he placed in a borrowed tomb for three days and three night but early Sunday

Morning he got up with all power of heaven of earth in his hand. He stepped out on resurrection ground.

How long will goodness and mercy follow me, David said all the days of my life.

How long will I serve the Lord, I promised him that I would serve him till I die.


The wisdom of the Lord crieth out in the streets, she crieth at the gates and at the entry of the city how long will you reject her call.
