In John 3:22-36, we are given a clear picture about who John the Baptist was, and how he saw himself and Jesus. John draws the image beautifully for us. Jesus at one side of the river, and His disciples were baptizing people. John in another part of the river and he was baptizing. Many times when the enemy attacks, it is sutler, this was not one of those times. The enemy was clearly trying to get jealously going in John’s heart. As w/ most things it seems, where John was concerned, it fail in getting John’s eyes off the Truth.
So they went to John and asked him, "Rabbi, do you remember the man you spoke so favorably about when he was with you on the other side of the Jordan River? Well, he's baptizing, and everyone is going to him!" v 26 I always laugh a little when I read that part, “do you remember the Man you spoke so favorably about?” As if he would be able to forget the Man, whose coming effected John’s entire, not just life but also way of life. But I digress, John understood what his ministry was about, and how it work. In verse 27 he answered, "People can't receive anything unless it has been given to them from heaven.”
No pride, no what about me?? In 1Cor 4:7 Paul explains that very thing. Who says that you are any better than other people? What do you have that wasn't given to you? If you were given what you have, why are you bragging as if it weren't a gift? Everything we are in God is towards His plan, for His purpose. Not only for our benefit, but for the prosperity of other, and for us to give back and Glorify Jesus. John then makes it crystal clear that, he knew who Jesus was. In verses 33-36 he testifies again, sometime before he was arrested. I have accepted what that person said, and I have affirmed that God is truthful. The man whom God has sent speaks God's message. After all, God gives him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves his Son and has put everything in his power. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, he will see God's constant anger."
Without question John tells all, “He is greater I am less,” speaking of Jesus. Some stayed w/ John till the end, but they all began to follow Jesus. Which in the end showed, just how effective John was at obedience to God, and the work God had for him to do.
