HIV/AIDS PREVENTION PROGRAM
A training program for trainers and sensibilization for all ages.
In the past, the community has been quiet about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Victims were looked at as social outcasts and with traditional extended family support decreasing due to the increase in viral infections, they had no where to turn. Because there is an alarming increase of the HIV virus in teenage girls as young as 13 and 15 year old teenage boys, we knew we had to respond quickly in an effort to stop this growing trend.
Health program on AIDS will be developed at Buwundo village Buikwe district basing on Biblical values that cover transmission and prevention, project healthy department, medical testing volunteers, Biblical counseling, hospice and home care team training as a community outreach program under Medical department under Save African Child Uganda project. Additionally, the program will offer free HIV testing which many tend to take advantage of when they hear how important it is to know their status. Our goal is to break the silence that has kept communities from speaking and reaching out to the many suffering in their communities and to also use that opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The program will be covered in 6 months of operation through biblical counseling, and medical care. Medical teams or individuals volunteers under this activity are called up on from all over the world to help in.
Since its inception, the project will present the program in many communities such as Zzana, Entebbe, Nateete, Namugongo, Mutungo, Nkumba, in case we get support from volunteers because the expanse of the epidemic is to high and also we hope to expanded the program to districts of Masindi, Masaka, Jinja, wakiso, kiboga and on the islands of Lake Victoria.
The HIV program shall be broken up into modules to make it easier to teach the youth, the target group of our program. In the coming two years of the program we hope have educated literally thousands of youth from primary 6 through secondary school about the disease. Besides schools, we shall also held our program at youth conferences, churches and in slums around Kampala, Buikwe town and even on one of the islands on Lake Victoria.
Our program also reaches adults in community gatherings. The need for parents to counsel their children about how the disease is transmitted and prevented is stressed. Clearly it is evident that it is this generation that holds the key to turning the tide against the worldwide AIDS pandemic.
We cry to God so as to bless this program with many open doors and He continues to do so. This year we hope to present our program over the Radio.
Currently , we are taking our program to Lohutok, Sudan. Since the signing of the peace agreement last year between northern and southern Sudan, the HIV pandemic has reached a critical state in the southern region of the country. Many in the internally displaced camps in northern Uganda are now moving back to their home in the Sudan. From the years of military presence along the border during the war, thousands of widows and children and even babies are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Most aren’t even aware that they are infected. The Sudan is on the verge of HIV/AIDS crises.
At this time, there is a window of opportunity in Sudan as long as the fragile peace agreement holds. We have grasped that opportunity to move in to test, educate about transmission, prevention and hospice care, and offer counseling to the widows and orphans. There we were able to train health care workers and many community members.
Funding will depend on prayer and the sacrificial and generous giving of a few donors whom we need to help support our efforts.
Our challenges still remain many and we are praying and trusting God for continued support. Without that, we cannot continue to provide the many things needed for the program to proceed.
Below are our financial prayer needs.
1.Funds to pay for the free HIV tests we offer
2.Funds to pay for fuel, registration, insurance, tires, etc. for the van
3.Funds to pay for lunches for trainers, new trainees and the many participants during the 8 hour per day HIV program
4.Funds to pay for accommodations when we take the program on the road hundreds of miles from home
5.Funds to buy Bibles as we train new members in discipleship and Biblical counseling classes
One of our worker/counselors who is a nurse by profession is praying that God will open a door for them to permanently train and counsel individuals and youth at schools. Those who come for HIV counseling to the Entebbe church are many and it is hard for the two counselors to balance their teaching professions with the great ministry need in the community. We are praying with them.
Plan and Goals
The need to establish a training center to train TOTs (Trainer of Trainers) became necessary.
The individuals that attend the TOT programs will be selected from communities of Buikwe districts.
Participants will attend the training at a training center to be constructed at Buwundo village.
When training is complete participants then disseminate the information acquired to their communities when they return.
Program costs are less expensive in terms of time and money.
Communities have easy access to the trainers since they are living with them in the same community.
Participants would pay a fee to stay at the hostel for the 2-week training course and receive certification.
Our trainers would be available to train during evenings, weekends and holidays throughout the year.
Proposed Training/Community Centre
The training centre headquarters will be at Buwundo adjacent to the Save African Child Uganda Center.
It is cheaper, convenient and appropriate to have the training at one central place allowing many people to be trained at the same time using minimal resources.
Trainers will be paid only teaching allowances and short transportation fees as they would all live near the centre.
This excludes long distance traveling and accommodation costs if they were dispatched to various distant districts.
At the end of each quarterly 2-week HIV training program, trainees will become the trainers at their local churches and communities and will educate the bigger population. This will lead to the increased knowledge and awareness of preventive measures on HIV/AIDS that will eventually reduce HIV/AIDS spread.
On Site training on all programs will be done at the Centre.
The mode of the training will include participatory and group work and field visit approaches.
Construction
Our construction Engineer partner David Sekayi has finished drawings, plans and budget ($35 per sq.ft.) of the proposed Community/Training Centre.
And we are currently looking for the money of this program and after getting it, a qualified construction engineering company will be employed for the construction.
Save African child Uganda Director will procure all project materials and all receipts will be kept in the accounts office for audit purposes.
Beneficiaries
The community members will use the lower floor of the multi-purpose room and adjoining classrooms for conferences, all types of training and social programs that meet the Health Centre guidelines and for children’s clubs and activities.
The upper floor will provide hostel accommodations for those attending one and two week training sessions, visiting international teams and individuals who wish to contribute time to develop new programs and conduct training sessions for the Health Centre and Community/Training Centre.
Monitoring and Evaluation
There will be regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure that the project is moving at the right speed and in the right direction. There will be internal evaluation of the project by the Board of Directors, all project coordinators and a technical advisor every three months.
