Here is my story … what’s yours? Pressing ‘pause’ in John 10.
What’s your story? Why do you get up and put on your pants, and do what you do every day? Allow me to answer, please. For me, it is my highest desire to live my life poured out in the service of Jesus Christ . . . and yet.
We have been studying about being sheep to the Good Shepherd, yet . . . I find that my temperament and personality—which folks tell me is Type ‘A’--makes it difficult for me to be a sheep. The sheep hear their shepherd’s call and simply follow; actually, it seems they amble. They are simple, trusting, some might say ‘dumb’ animals. I love the idea of simply following … and yet, it is my very business “to study to show myself approved unto men, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” (2 Timothy 2.15) I do not ever remember seeing a sheep pictured with a scroll under his hooves, or a Bible propped up for his perusal, yet I do not leave home without one. Whether at the gym, on the sidelines of one of my sons’ soccer games, or at the beach, I have study material with me; productivity is key … do you see? Not so sheep-like, is it?
Yet, I am trying to figure out the way of the sheep, and trying desperately to follow in the steps of my Shepherd.
How do you and I apprehend the truths of what we know of Jesus Christ, and bring them down to where we live—in the busy-ness of the Western world, the oppression of the Middle East, the skepticism of academia, and the hopelessness of many very dark situations? We believe Jesus’ I Am statements, and act upon them. “I Am” … the Light of the World, the Door, the Good Shepherd . . . in each case, he is Jesus, Son of God, come to us, to bring us light, to protect us, to lead, guide, and save us. As opposed to every other religion or self-help program in the world, which revolve around our good works, our strivings, our knowledge, etc. We believe, and we trust. Indeed, we follow. We simply follow like sheep.
What’s your story today? Why do you do what you do…’ever thought about it? Remember, we have been called to be sheep. As for me, “I will follow you, Jesus of Nazareth . . . whether it be through study or grazing, solitude or trial. I will follow you, my Shepherd, as you help me to help others follow you as well. I love you.” You?
