Throughout history much has been written about man’s search to know if there is a God and, if so, to know what he is like.
We are exhorted by the Scripture to seek and search for God. The Psalmist says, “Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him” (105:4). 1 Chronicles 16:11: “Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him.” Jeremiah 29:13: “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”
Yet, because of our sinful and rebellious natures, our efforts to search for God are often sporadic and unsteady, which is why I stand in awe that God seeks us first.
That is right. God seeks us first.
Jeremiah 1:5:"I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb."
The Psalmist writes this in Psalm 139:
"1 O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. 2 You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. … You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. … 13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. … 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life."
These words are comforting and reassuring beyond measure. They tell us that God is not the mysterious, impersonal and invisible architect of creation who is indifferent to us, but rather a divine being who cares for us so much that he seeks us and wants to know and be known by us. He loves us more than we can possibly imagine. John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
If you seek God earnestly, you will find him, and he will find you. Seek and serve God, and let him work through you. Finding God, or conversely, letting him find us, is easier than you might think. He is always near, and he has made himself known to us.
In closing, the Bible urges us to “draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” (James 4:8).
