Hey guys, my cousin Tara has an awesome story she shared about her being a cancer survivor...It really touched me when i read it and would love for you to read it too... here is what she said:
(Tara Hernandez) :
I wanted to share my story, as I am a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at about 6 months old and I was treated at Yale New Haven Hospital's Children Center. I've been listening to the Radiothon on WPLR (99.1) for the Tommy fund, and I have to say… it's the first I've heard if it. My family was fortunate enough not to need there support, but I'm so grateful to know that there is support out there for family that needs it. It doesn't just affect mom, dad and siblings… but the whole family. PLEASE consider donating to The Tommy Fund (http://www.tommyfund.org/) and support the research and the desire to help familes in need. THANKS!!
Here is my story:
I was born August 9, 1980. I am currently 27 years old and my life, I can surely say is a gift from God. I was born with a form of Leukemia called (Chronic Benign Neutropenia). My mother discovered it as she was noticing I was becoming all polka-dotted on my skin. I was brought to the doctors, then sent for blood work, where it was determined that indeed I had cancer.
For three years I was in and out of Yale New Haven Hospital , mostly in though. They kept me in a closed crib --- as my white blood count had gotten so low that God forbid anyone had the slightest cold --- I could die. So, I spent the first three years of my life in a hospital, in a crib, unable to walk or even play with kids... As I got sicker and sicker, doctors kept telling my parents that there was nothing they can give me to treat it...back then, there was not much out there for babies with cancer. I was only administered Cortozone shots for the pain, thats all. I was not given much time to live, as my blood count was down to 90 and dropping (a normal count is over 1,000+. My red blood cells were eating all my white blood cells, therefore my body was unable to fight off infection). A donor was then found for me, because I was in need of a bone marrow transplant. At this time in my parent's life, they were not truly living for the Lord. My father went to his weekly prayer meeting the night before the transplant --- he got down on his knees and said this, "Lord, thank you so much for giving us three great years with this little girl, but I offer her back to you as she is yours and I can't bare to see her in anymore pain, again Lord thank you for sharing her with us, but I surrender her back to you."
When I was brought to the hospital. I was given one last exam before I was to have the transplant --- as the doctors came out from the exam room, my parents said they looked as though they had seen a ghost. They asked my parents for a minute to talk to them. They looked at my father square in the eyes and said --- Felix, I have no explanation for this, but your daughter is FINE. We've ex-rayed and examined your daughter over and over and it's as if this is not the same little girl we've been treating for 3 years... the cancer is gone, her blood count is up too about 900+. My Parents we're emotional as you can imagine --- month later I went back to the doctors for checkups, sometime my blood count would fluctuate, but it was a test for my parents in there faithfulness with the Lord Jesus Christ. God chose to use me (a baby at the time) to put their eyes back on him and put there trust solely in Him. I was healed and I never look back and wonder why it happened to me. I know it was not only to bring my family closer together, but now 24 years later I can still use my testimony to share God's mercy and faithfulness if you put your trust in Him. I can also THANK Yale for there support and kindness to my parents as they endured a disease that they did not know much about, but the staff there became family and than God for there support.
Until the age of 5, my father faithfully brought me to have my blood count checked. On the way, one day... I looked at my dad and said, "Daddy, why do I keep getting my finger poked... if Jesus really healed me, I'm healed right?" My father tells me, that was the last time I went and had my finger poked --- because in fact, sometime all you need is a little Childlike Faith.
God Bless and thank you for letting me share my story with you!
